Bloomsburg Break-In's

Bloomsburg police... as well as other agencies in Columbia County are searching for two individuals wanted in connection with break – in's at two local businesses early Thursday morning. The two white men are wanted for questioning in the break in's at the Fuel On Convenience Store at 7th and Market Streets... as well as the Bloomsburg YMCA at 7th and Iron. Surveillance video show the pair wearing hoodies... one with the name of “Michael Jordan” across the front. If you have information about the incidents... call Bloomsburg Police.

 

Berwick Community Watch

Folks with the Berwick Area United Way are going determine next month if there's enough interest to form a community watch group. United Way CEO Ginny Crake says it's a way to give Berwick police a set of extra eyes on the street. The April 9th organizational meeting will begin at 5:30 at the Berwick High School Auditorium.

 

BIDA Loans

The Berwick Industrial Development Association has launched a program designed to loan money to businesses so they can create good paying jobs in the area. BIDA Executive Director Steve Phillips says $800,000 has been set aside for large business... while an addition $200,000 is earmarked for smaller firms. Phillips emphasized that the BIDA program is for loans... and not a grant program.  Interested... call Mr. Phillips at the BIDA offices in the former Eagles building on South Market Street in Berwick.

 

BU Recycling

The work load will get a little heavier for the folks who work at Bloomsburg's Recycling Center on Patterson Avenue... just off Old Berwick Road. The recycling center's Charles Fritz said the decision to take on all of BU's recyclables follows a look at how other schools deal with their trash. Fritz says an agreement has been signed... and starting July 1st... the Recycling Center will collect all of BU's recyclable products. The university will pay the town 15 – thousand dollars for picking up recyclables

 

Shamokin District

The events at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. continue to reverberate around the Susquehanna Valley. The Shamokin Area School District hired three armed guards this week to patrol its schools. The guards go along with the purchase of four metal detectors earlier this year.

 

Hazleton Slumlords

The city of Hazleton is putting some teeth in a law adopted late last year. It requires out – of – town landlords to hire someone to keep an eye on their properties. In essence... the city is trying to crack down on slumlords. The city says if landlords are cited and don’t fix up their properties or pay the fines, it’s considered a crime, and the case moves up to the county level for prosecution.

 

Pipeline

Community groups are mounting opposition to a 120-mile natural gas pipeline project in eastern Pennsylvania. The pipeline will come through western Columbia County... as well as Montour... under the Susquehanna River into Northumberland County near Danville.... on it's way to Berks County. The gas begins it's journey at Marcellus Shale deposit in Lycoming County. The Reading Eagle reports Missouri-based Commonwealth Pipeline hasn't released details on the project since December. The company says it hopes to have the pipeline in service by 2015.

 

Ostrowski Charged

A former Holy Redeemer High School football coach has been charged with indecent assault, corruption of minors and manufacturing child pornography. Authorities say 29 – year old Joseph Ostrowski of Wilkes – Barres is accused of molesting a male student between March and May of last year. This is not the first time Ostrowski has had sex – related charges filed against him. Earlier this year he pleaded guilty to federal charges of kiddie porn and cyber stalking.

 

Gaming Money

The city of Hazleton is the big winner when it comes from casino gaming. It has won a $2 – million dollar grant from the state's share of gambling proceeds. The money is already earmarked to renovate Traders Bank in Hazleton... and open a youth center being proposed by Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon. The money is also earmarked for roads in Black Creek and Butler Townships.

 

Dushore Death

State Police at Laporte are investigating the death of a 46 – year old man at the Sullivan Terrace Apartments in Dushore. Police says George Knouff was found in his apartment late Tuesday morning.  It doesn't appear the death stems from foul play.... but investigators are awaiting the result of an autopsy.

BU Wrestling

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team will be well represented when the NCAA Division One National Championships begin Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa. Six Huskies will be competing. Kim Schooley is covering the championships for the WHLM Stations. You can hear his first report in Thursday's 5 o'clock news.

 

BU Softball

The Bloomsburg University softball team swept a doubleheader at Winston Salem State Wednesday by scores of 7 to 6 and 11 to 5.

 

NCAA Tournament

The field of 64 is set for the NCAA basketball tournament. In last night's play-in games James Madison defeated LIU – Brooklyn 68 to 55... and La Salle downed Boise State 80 to 71.

 

Bucknell

Bucknell opens the NCAA tournament Thursday at 12:40 PM against Butler. That game will be played in Lexington, Kentucky.

 

NBA

In the NBA Wednesday night, the Miami Heat staged a big comeback to keep their winning streak alive. Trailing the Cavaliers by 27 points in the third quarter of their game in Cleveland, the Heat rallied for a 98-95 win, extending their streak to 24 straight games.
