Briar Creek Twp Accident
Still no word as to who died in a one car crash this morning in Briar Creek Township northeast of Berwick.Authorities were dispatched around 5:45 this morning. Reports from the scene indicate that the driver of the car lost control... and slammed head – on into a tree... the car bursting into flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from the Columbia County Coroner's office.
Federal Highway Safety Funds totaling almost a half million dollars will be dedicated to improvements at Route 54 in conjunction with the Danville Flood Control Project. State Senator John Gordner of Berwick... and State Representative Kurt Masser who represents southern Columbia and Montour Counties worked with Danville officials and the state Department of Transportation to secure funding. The money will be used for rail crossing improvements... and provide for a new signal system at Routes 11 and 54. Last year, Senator Gordner and Representative Masser helped secure $3.8 million in state funds to complete the Danville Flood Control System.
It's difficult to navigate... and tough to get information from... and overall... clunky. With that... the Bloomsburg Town Council this week okayed a plan with a Lewisburg company to update the town's website. Mayor Dan Knorr says one can extract the information needed from the town's current web site placed on line years ago. Under the terms of the deal... the town will pay Summit $7,900 to make and bring the new site to life... plus a yearly hosting fee of $360. Knorr says he hope the new site will be launched by the end of the year.
Lightstreet, Espy and Bloomsburg firemen were called out Thursday night to a reported fire at the Denny's restaurant on Papermill Road at Interstate 80. Restaurant guests were being evacuated as firemen rolled in. What they found... according to reports... was nothing more than a malfunctioning florescent light ballast. The problem was taken care off... and crews returned to quarters within an hour.
Man Goes Ballistic
A Nesquehoning man is cooling his heels after he allegedly used a tire iron to smash in part of the Lansford Police station. 33 – year old Carl Stevens was also caught on video tape taking the tire iron to the borough's tax collectors office. And if that wasn't enough... during an arraignment after his arrest... he destroyed the district magistrate's office. Lansford's police chief said the path of destruction was over a girlfriend. Steven's won't be going anywhere soon... bail was set at $50,000 cash.
A signing of a couple of pieces of paper later this morning... will allow two Hazleton – area fire departments to co-operate more freely. When they set pen to paper... Hazleton Mayor Joe Yannuzzi and West Hazleton Mayor Frank Schmidt will complete an agreement allowing both fire departments to come to each other's aide. The document signing to take place at 11:30 at Hazleton City Hall.
Rice Twp. Fireman
The former treasurer of the Rice Township Volunteer Fire Department has surrendered. Earlier this week... 31 year old Donald Bly was charged with theft by deception after allegedly writing $4,400 worth of checks to himself... instead of purchasing equipment for the department. Bly is currently free on $5,000 unsecured bond following a preliminary arraignment.
Chili Cook Off
A unique event is on tap for next Wednesday in Bloomsburg. It's the first annual Chili Cook Off at the Moose Exchange. Area cooks are signing up to bring their specialty to the Exchange where they'll be judged... so says Downtown Bloomsburg Manager Adrienne Mael. The first annual chili cook off starts at 5 PM next Wednesday at the Moose Exchange in the 200 block of West Main Street.
Danville – based Geisinger Health Systems is expanding it's influence in northeastern Pennsylvania.They broke ground this week at Scranton's Mt. Pleasant Corporate Center for an estimated $27 – million dollar medical facility. The new building will combine several Geisinger facilities scattered around the Scranton area.
BU Women's Basketball
The season came to an end for the Huskies Friday night, as did the journey of the four departing Seniors, when BU fell to IUP 72-59 in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. The Seniors end their careers with a 75% winning record. You can hear the details with Larry White in the WHLM Husky Post Game Report:
The NCAA announced the pairings for next week's NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Bloomsburg University will be sending six wrestlers to Des Moines, Iowa after qualifying at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships last weekend. Action will get underway with the opening session on March 21st. .
In NHL action from Thursday night.. the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3 to 1. Friday night the New Jersey is at Philadelphia.
