Landlords Association

Still plenty of Bloomsburg property owners upset over an ordinance passed last week by Town Council dealing with the inspections of non – student and home rental property. More discussion as the Bloomsburg Area Landlords Association met Wednesday night. Councilman Bill Kreischer authored the ordinance... and voted for it... keeping safety of tenants top of mind. The measure goes into effect October 1st... and calls for the hiring of at least one additional person for the town's Code Enforcement department.

 

Sex Charges Filed

A Bloomsburg man is in the Columbia County Prison after state police filed more than a dozen sex related charges against him. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition.. 55 – year old Clark Abresch allegedly sexually abused the girl when she was between the ages of 4 and 7. The child is now 12... telling police in 2011 what happened. The charges were filed by state police this week following a hearing last summer. Abresch contends he believed the child was his girlfriend when she crawled into bed. He's being held on $100,000 bail.

 

David Millard / Budget

The House Appropriations committee is continuing budget hearings in Harrisburg this week. Appearing before the committee officials with the State System of Higher Education were asked pointed questions. State Representative David Millard of Mt. Pleasant Township said he was pleased to hear the state system schools are striving to hold tuition increases to a minimum in this tight budget environment. Those budget hearings continue the rest of the week in Harrisburg.

 

Ice Rescue

A dramatic rescue of one person who fell through the ice of a lake at Francis Slocum State Park near Dallas on Wednesday. Authorities say two teenage girls fell through the thin ice on the lake... one getting free... the other struggling, but couldn't get out of the water. A driver who saw what was happening and a Kingston Township police officer went to rescue the girl, but both went through the ice... but got out of the water on their own. The teenage girl was rescued moments later by a Trucksville volunteer firefighter. All are expected to be okay.

 

Fire Department

Brandonville's Citizens Fire Company... south of Hazleton... in neighboring Schuylkill County... is out of business. Two months ago... the East Union Township supervisors ordered the volunteer fire company to shut down due to the lack of certified firefighters. At a meeting of the supervisors Wednesday night... they were told the fire company is no longer in business.


Budget Cuts / Airport

Federal budget cuts could effect some service at Northeastern Pennsylvania's busiest airport. The overnight shift in the control tower at the Wilkes – Barre / Scranton Airport could be a thing of the past.  It's one of 72 airports across the nation that could lose overnight service. Airport Director Barry Centini says the move shouldn't effect commercial air traffic.

 

Mobile Meth Lab

Two Berwick men are in the Columbia County Prison after they were arrested by State Police when they were discovered allegedly making meth over the weekend. State Police at Bloomsburg tell us they collared 51 – year old Walter Ridall and 34 – year old Kenneth Crumb while their van was parked on the Old Tioga Turnpike in Fishing Creek Township. Police say Ridall was behind the wheel... while Crumb was in the rear of the van allegedly making meth. Both face a long list of charges.... and were jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail.

 

Burglary

State Police at Laporte... in Sullivan County... say they're looking for the person responsible for breaking into a summer home in Fox Township. Police tell us that sometime between November of last year... and Tuesday... someone broke into the seasonal home of Delores Moore of Red Lion. The burglars also broke into two sheds on the property. If you have information about the Sullivan County break in.... call State Police in Laporte.

 

Leprechaun Loop

Looking for something to do the day before St. Patrick's Day.... why not take part in the 1st Annual 5K Run / Walk Leprechaun Loop on March 16th sponsored by the St. Columba Catholic School in Bloomsburg. The school's EJ Moore says a fun time will be had by all. The run / walk begins Saturday the 16th near the Caldwell Consistory in Bloomsburg. BU Women's Basketball

Riding a seven game winning streak, the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team has moved up one spot to 7th in this week's Atlantic Region Rankings. Friday night at 7:30 at the Nelson Field House, the Huskies will play Edinboro in the PSAC semifinals. In the first game at 5:30, Millersville will take on Gannon. The championship game will be played Saturday night at 7 O'clock.

 

HS Wrestling

Ten area high school wrestlers will compete in the Class AA state championships. Those championships begin this morning at 9 at the Giant Center in Hershey.

 

BU Wrestling

On Saturday, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team will compete in the Eastern Wrestling League championships at Edinboro University. The tournament is the qualifying event for the NCAA championships.

 

College Basketball

In men's college basketball last night, in a Patriot League quarterfinal, Bucknell beat Navy 58-42. Saturday afternoon in Lewisburg, Bucknell will play Army in a semifinal game.

 

NBA

In the NBA Wednesday night,... the Atlanta Hawks downed the Philadelphia 76ers 107 – 96.
