Mt. Carmel Fire
Investigators are expected to be at the scene of a fire, which extensively damaged three homes last night in Mt. Carmel in the 400 block of Center Street... at Locust. The fire began shortly before 6:30 Tuesday night in one of the homes. The multi – alarm fire was fought by several different volunteer departments before being brought under control. No injuries were reported.
Lightstreet Road Crash
A Bloomsburg University nursing instructor was slightly injured Tuesday afternoon after her SUV rolled over on Lightstreet Road near Hospital Drive. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition 60 – year old Mary Ann Cegielsky of Shenandoah was apparently distracted. Her 2007 Subaru Outback hit the embankment along Lightstreet Road... overturning on it's roof. Cegielsky managed to crawl out of the SUV with the help of near-by BU Students.

President Obama delivered his customary State of the Union speech Tuesday night at the nation's capitol... in the chamber of the House of Representatives... before a joint session of both houses of congress. As he took the long walk down the aisle to the applause of lawmakers... Mr. Obama stepped on floor covering made by Bloomsburg Carpet on Route 11. That makes the company's Marty Bowman pretty happy. A former Potts Grove fire fighter will attempt to change his plea during his trial in April. 35 – year old Charles Jacobs of Lewisburg wants to withdraw his guilty plea to false alarms. That request surfaced this week during a pre – trial conference in Montour County Court. Jacobs is being represented by Bloomsburg attorney Leslie Bryden.
If you get an assistance check from the federal government... the days of receiving it in the mail is coming to an end. Starting March 1st... the feds will require you to have a direct deposit checking account.... or they'll send your benefits on a government – issued debit card. Kathy Lynn of the Columbia – Montour Office of the Aging says there's a big advantage... such as knowing where every penny of your government payment is... anytime you check. A Shenandoah man remains in serious condition after a Monday accident near Wilburton. Police say 50 – year old Yazeed Azar of Shenandoah missed a stop sign in the fog... on Midvalley Road and crashed his Jeep into a maintenance building at the Zion Methodist Cemetery. Azar sustained head trauma and complained of back pain.
Block Grant Program
$17.6 - million dollars could be headed to the Hazleton Area School District over the next four years... if the state – run liquor system goes private. The Corbett Administration is out with a break down of the money coming from the “Passport for Learning Block Grant.” School board president Brian Earley said the grant could help the district open a magnet school.
Authorities now say a candle is to blame for an apartment building fire on North James Street earlier this week. Although no one was at home when the fire broke out... more than a dozen people were displaced. Investigators say the fire erupted in a hallway at the top of the stairwell in the four unit apartment complex.
Wilkes - Barre Twp Trial
Testimony is expected to resume Wednesday morning in the theft trial for Wilkes – Barre Township fire chief John Yuknavich. The trial began on Monday with jury selection.. but it came to a grinding halt on Tuesday due to a lengthy disagreement between the prosecutor and the judge. Authorities accuse Yuknavich of writing an estimated $11,000 worth of checks on the fire department's account.... and using the department's credit card for unauthorized personal use.
The Husky Men's and Women's teams were on the road Wednesday night at Shippensburg. The Women won their game 66-58. The Men lost theirs 68-59. You can hear all the details with Jim Doyle in the WHLM Husky Post Game Report:
Boys HS Basketball
In boys high school basketball last night... Lewisburg defeated Southern Columbia 52 – 48... Dallas got by Berwick 58 – 49... and it was Sullivan County over Benton 60 – 28.
In boys high school basketball Thursday night, Danville plays Lewisburg in the Heartland Conference semifinals at Mifflinburg. That game can be heard on the whlm stations starting with the pregame show at 7:15.
Girls HS Basketball
In girls high school basketball... Bloomsburg downed South Williamsport 55 – 49... Montoursville edged Central Columbia 42 – 39... Southern Columbia got by Lewisburg 41 – 37... Muncy defeated Millville 50 – 38... and Danville downed Midd West 53 – 18.
Wednesday night at Mifflinburg, the girls semifinals will be played in the first ever Heartland Conference Tournament. In the first game at 6 O'clock, Danville plays Mount Carmel followed by Benton against Shamokin.
In the NHL last night... Philadelphia edged Winnepeg 3 to 2.
