The National Weather Service at State College has issued a winter storm warning for Columbia and Montour counties. Meteorologists are predicting two massive storms will collide over eastern Pennsylvania producing a wintry mix. We could get up to two inches before night fall, and three to five more before daybreak Saturday. Blizzard conditions are expected in New England with up to two feet of snow in some areas. The storm is forcing airlines to cancel thousands of flights.
PPL Electric Utilities is preparing for the thrashing we could get from Mother Nature. The utilities' Terri McBride says the company is activating their central emergency response center this morning...alerting personnel to prepare for extended shifts, and calling up 100 utility workers from it's Louisville affiliates to assist in power outage restoration. McBride says if you lose power, give them a call at 1-800-Dial-PPL.
If you're one of the thousands of people across Columbia and Montour Counties who get benefits from the federal government, such as Social Security, SSI, or VA benefits...you soon won't be getting checks in the mail. The feds are pushing recipients to get direct deposit accounts or they'll send benefits on a government issued debit card. The switch happens March 1st.
Hit and Run
Police are investigating a hit and run crash that happened Thursday evening in Briar Creek Plaza. An unknown model pick up truck struck an unoccupied vehicle in front of the Giant Grocery Store around 6:00 PM. If you have any information regarding the hit and run call state police at Bloomsburg at 387-4261.
National Girl and Women In Sports
The Bloomsburg University Athletic Department is hosting the second annual National Girl and Women in sports day tomorrow at the Nelson Field House. The day starts with a free basketball clinic for girls in elementary up to, and including, high school at 10:00 AM. Following the clinic all girls participating will be given a free ticket to the Huskies game with Cheyney that starts at 1:00 PM. Walk-up registration will be accepted.
YMCA Open House
The Bloomsburg Area YMCA has taken the wraps off their improvements over the past few months. Y Executive Director Roger Brown says he expects a pretty good turnout for the refurbished building's open house. The open house is this Sunday afternoon starting at 1:00 PM. It features tours of the main building and the field house, with plenty of activities taking place.
The Berwick Area United Way will host a free tax filing site again this year. If you made less than $52,000 in 2012 you could qualify for the program. For information...or to make an appointment...call the Berwick Area Untied Way at 759-1005.
Budget and Kids
Governor Corbett's budget is getting low marks from educators, but another group sees signs of encouragement for Pennsylvania's children. The Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children says the governor's budget proposal is a turn in direction after cuts during the recent bleak economic times.
There's a new campaign moving in the classroom, as statistics show few schools provide opportunities for daily physical activity. The program “Fit For a Healthier Generation” includes a three to five minute physical activity that can get kids moving in the classroom. Access the videos at www.healthiergeneration.org.
BHS Football Coach Says Goodbye
After 11 very successful seasons, Bloomsburg High School football coach Larry Sones is stepping down. Sones handed in his resignation yesterday. In the 2007 season, he led the Panthers to a 13 and 2 record including a District 4 Class A championship. That season his team advanced to the state semifinals.
High School Basketball
On Wednesday Bloomsburg High School senior Zach Mrozek went over one thousand points for his career in the Panthers' win over previously unbeaten Saint Jon Neuman. Tonight, Southern Columbia senior Kayla Lavella needs nine point to reach the one thousand career milestone when her team plays at Central Columbia.
In boys' high school basketball tonight, Berwick is at home against Coughlin. You can hear that game on the whlm stations starting with the pregame show at 7:15.
In college wrestling tonight, the 14th ranked Huskies of Bloomsburg University are at Rutgers.
