Nor'easter Predicted

Forecasters are growing more confident that a major winter storm will impact parts of the Northeast and New England Friday into Saturday. This Nor'easter-type storm system will bring strong winds and heavy snow to New England. The National Weather Service in Binghamton has already issued a Winter Storm Watch for neighboring Luzerne County as well as the Wyoming Valley... east through the Pocono's. However, the NWS in State College have not issued any watches for Columbia and Montour Counties... and are forecasting freezing rain and sleet Friday... turning to rain... changing to snow with very little accumulation expected.

 

Kurt Masser / Budget

It's been a couple of days... and state lawmakers are finally getting a grip of Governor Corbett's proposed $28.4 – billion dollar 2013 – 2014 state budget. It's an increase of $678 – million over the current spending plan. Representative Kurt Masser who watches out for Columbia, Montour and Northumberland Counties in Harrisburg said the governor provided a good starting point for budget negotiations. Masser says another important issue is an uptick in funding for education... despite the state's fragile economy.

 

Corbett / CHIP

A day after his budget address... Governor Corbett was in the Wyoming Valley... at the Osterhout Library in Wilkes – Barre. While there midday Wednesday... Mr. Corbett touted his plan to increase outreach and enrollment for the state Children's Health Insurance program... also known as CHIP. The Governor said the $8.5 - million he placed in his proposed budget could enroll and cover an additional 9,300 uninsured children under the age of 19.

 

Dog Trouble

Two Jackson Township brothers... in trouble with the law last summer for having too many dogs at their home... have been charged again. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... 54 – year old Albert Ambrosia... and his 59 – year old brother, Tom... are now accused of housing 32 Chihuahuas without a kennel license at their Ridge Road home near Benton. Last summer... the Ambrosia's were charged with animal cruelty when authorities found 200 Chihuahuas at their home. The majority ended up in shelters for adoption. Now... the Ambrosia's face a preliminary hearing on the latest charges March 6th.

 

Spamalot

If you're looking for some stress relief... the national tour of “Spamalot” comes to the Bloomsburg University campus Friday night at 8 O'clock. It's billed as an outrageous musical comedy ripped off from the classic film “Monty Python and The Holy Grail. The one – time only performance of “Spamalot” takes place at 8 O'clock at the Haas Center for the Arts on the BU Campus. It's part of the University's Celebrity Artist Series.

 

Pallets Stolen

A Luzerne County man is in jail after he allegedly stole Aluminum pallets from a meat packing plant over the weekend... and then again... earlier this week. State Police arresting Bryan Polascik who allegedly made off with the ten pallets from the Citterio plant on Route 940 in Foster Township. The pallets were valued at an estimated $3,500.

 

Arson Suspect

A man accused of setting fire last month that destroyed two homes in the 600 block of East Sunbury Street in Shamokin has been offered a plea deal. 21 – year old James Neidinger has been offered a deal for him to plead guilty to two felony counts of arson. But right now, the deal has not been accepted. Earlier this week... Neidinger 's attorney asked a district judge in Shamokin for a reduction in bail... but that was rejected. He's currently in the Northumberland County Prison in lieu of $200,000 cash bail.

 

Condition Update

A Mt. Carmel man remains in “critical” condition at Geisinger Medical Center after his pick up truck slammed into an SUV... killing two people this week. Authorities say 52 – year old Glenn Meredith was swerving all over Route 54 on the Natalie Mountain... when his truck collided head on with an SUV driven by 40 – year old Tina Alexander of Gordon. She's listed in “fair” condition at GMC. The crash killed Alexander's relatives... 92 – year old Charles Carl and 76 – year old Ronald Matejick. Police say charges are expected to be filed.

 

Vets Plates

Pennsylvania motorists can now show their support of veterans by purchasing a new license plate. The new "Honoring Our Veterans" plate which was approved last year features an image of the American Flag and bald eagle and costs $35.00. Fifteen dollars will be donated to the veterans trust fund. The plate is available for passenger cars and light trucks.

BU Basketball 

The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams played Millersville last night at the Nelson Field House. WHLM's Jim Doyle says in triple overtime... the Bloomsburg men downed Millersville 100 – 94. The women played a heart breaker of a game, but was defeated by Millersville 64 – 62. The Huskies return to action Saturday afternoon against Cheyney at Nelson Field House. You can hear that game on the WHLM Stations.

 

Boys HS Basketball 

In boys high school basketball Wednesday night... Bloomsburg handed Saint John Neuman their first loss of the season 59 – 53... Muncy defeated Benton 49 – 44... Southern Columbia got by Central Columbia 34 – 30... Danville downed Jersey Shore 74 – 60... and Millville out scored South Williamsport 60 – 53.

 

NBA

In the NBA Wednesday night... The Indiana Pacers rolled over the Philadelphia 76ers 89 – 69.
