Governor Corbett Unveils Budget Proposal

An ambitious budget proposal released Tuesday by Gov. Tom Corbett would boost Pennsylvania's core state government spending by nearly 3 percent while increasing support for public schools, cutting business taxes and counting on the Legislature to adopt long-term changes to public pensions. The Republican governor's third annual budget plan takes the risky legal and political strategy of assuming that his proposed pension changes are approved by lawmakers, saving hundreds of millions of dollars a year right away. In addition, Corbett, as expected, called for an increase on wholesale gas taxes to come to the rescue of the state's highways, bridges and mass transit systems.

 

Budget / Health Care

Governor Corbett delivers his budget address at midday Tuesday to a joint session of the state house and senate. It is... a multi – million dollar health care proposal aimed at rural and underserved areas of the Commonwealth. During a recent appearance at St. Luke's Miners Health Center in McAdoo... acting PA Health Secretary Michael Wolf said the money should go a long way in expanding programs. The Governor's proposal also calls for expanding a program to help attract and retain health care practitioners in rural and underserved areas of the state.

 

Mt. Carmel Twp Fatal

Charges are pending following a two vehicle collision midday Monday which killed two cousins from Gordon... in neighboring Schuylkill County. Authorities say the accident happened on Route 54... about a half mile from the Route 61 intersection on Natalie Mountain in Mt. Carmel Township. Authorities say 92 – year old Charles Carl and 76 – year old Roland Matejick were on their way to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville in an SUV driven by 40 – year old Tina Alexander of Gordon.... a relative of the two men. The SUV was struck head – on by a pick up truck driven by 52 – year old Glenn Meredith of Mt. Carmel. Carl and Matejick were pronounced dead at the scene... while Alexander and Meredith were taken to Geisinger for treatment.

 

Bwk United Way

With the Berwick Area United Way surpassing it's $400,000, 2012 capital campaign... it allows the organization to expand their ongoing mission. This year... a group of volunteer's will be preparing tax returns... so says United Way Executive Director Ginny Crake. To get the free service, one must make less than $50,000 a year. To make an appointment give the Berwick United way on Second street a call.

 

Firefighter Sentenced

A former Potts Grove volunteer firefighter has been sentenced to anywhere from four to nine years in prison for his role in two arson fires in Northumberland County. Charles Jacobs of Lewisburg is already serving time for arson fires in Montour and Union Counties. The sentence stems from setting fire to a barn and a truck near Milton.

 

Col – Mont Vo – Tech

While some parents insist their kids go to college to find a trade... the Vo – Tech's Jennifer Hain.. says the Sweppenheiser Drive school may provide the education and credentials needed to find a real world job. The Columbia – Montour Vo – Tech open house is Sunday... starting at 1 O'clock.

 

Foster Twp Fire

A state police fire marshal has been called in to determine what caused a Sunday night blaze at a vacation cabin in Foster Township near Hazleton. The fire taking place on Tannery Road... after near – by residents heard an explosion. No one was at the cabin Sunday night... and no injuries were reported.

 

Hazleton / W. Hazleton

The Hazleton and West Hazleton fire departments should be working in unison next week under a deal reached by both departments. In the past... the departments have backed each other during time of need of major emergencies. The agreement just formalizes the arrangement. Hazleton City Council okayed the deal last week... and West Hazleton's council is expected to due the same during a meeting next week.

 

NEPA Gas Prices

Gas prices across northeastern Pennsylvania have climbed 12 – cents a gallon over the past week. The latest Triple – A Fuel Gauge report out this morning shows the price of self – serve regular is averaging $3.68 - a gallon... up a penny from Sunday... but up a whopping 12 - cents from a week ago. The reason... the increasing price of crude... refinery maintenance and low inventories of gasoline.

 

Sandusky Investigation

She kept her campaign promise... Democratic State Attorney General Kathleen Kane appointed a special deputy on Monday... to investigate Governor Corbett's handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse case. Former federal prosecutor H – Geoffrey Moulton will try and find out why it took so long to bring charges against Sandusky... a former Penn State University assistant football coach. There has been no time line in completing the investigation.

 

Hummels Wharf Fire

Authorities say a half – million dollar fire at EMS Surgical equipment in Hummels Wharf started in the furnace of the building. The firm designs post – surgical garments and is located along the Old Trail in Monroe Township. Now... the business owner plans to move production to a building next door.

 

Milton Fight

Details are sketchy... but an estimated ten people were involved in a street fight in Milton on Sunday afternoon. The incident happened in front of 31 Rose Street... with several of those involved having knives. Up to four people required medical attention. Milton Police received backup from Watsontown, Mifflinburg and Buffalo Valley Regional police in order to stop the fighting. No arrests were reported... however a teenage boy and girl were seen being placed in a squad car.

Boys HS Basketball

In boys high school basketball Monday night, Danville made the drive to Central Columbia High School on Old Berwick Road. WHLM's Jim Doyle says the Ironmen came away with a 54 – 26 victory. In other boys' games Monday night... Selinsgrove just got by Southern Columbia 54 – 53... and Muncy outscored Columbia Montour Vo Tech 63 – 48.

 

Girls HS Basketball

In girls' basketball... Wyoming Valley West defeated Berwick 54 – 47... and it was Muncy over Benton 52 – 48.

 

NBA

In the NBA Monday night... the Philadelphia 76er's won their third straight game by defeating the Orlando Magic 78 – 61.
