The folks at Columbia County Emergency Management kept an eye on the storm which passed through the area overnight. For the most part... the rain has ended. The National Weather Service in State College has issued a Wind Advisory... and has dropped the Flood Watch issued Wednesday, but the EMA's Michelle Frey says small stream flooding and low level flooding from the Susquehanna may be a problem. Forecasters say the Susquehanna will crest at 17.9 feet at Bloomsburg Friday night at 7 O'clock.
Scott Township is sitting nearly $2 – million federal and state dollars earmarked for the buyout of 22 homes severely damaged by the September 2011 floods. The homes are located on the south side of Old Berwick Road near Edgar Avenue... as well as White Birch Lane. Township Secretary Eric Stahley says the property will be returned to a park – like setting and included in the township's comprehensive plans. Stahley says the area could be turned into recreation areas for soccer fields or softball diamonds... but whatever the case... no permanent structures will be constructed on the properties.
One of the busiest places Thursday afternoon will be the PA Health Department office in the 1000 block of Market Street in Bloomsburg. Department personnel will be providing free flu shots to those folks not already immunized. The department's Kait Gillis in Harrisburg says the current flu season has left it's mark with 27,000 confirmed cases resulting in a hundred deaths. Before you can take advantage of the flu shot offer... make an appointment by calling 387 – 4257. The free program begins at 3 O'clock Thursday afternoon... and runs through 7 O'clock.
Investigators have determined that a fatal fire in a Hazleton home Sunday night was deliberately set. They say 54 – year old Anthony Gentle told them his girlfriends started the fire. 47 – year old Mary Cook was found outside the home in the 13 – hundred block of North Church Street. She died at a hospital. Gentle was rushed to a hospital in Allentown... treated and released.
A shortfall of $60 – million federal dollars is forcing the Keystone Job Corps Center in Drums to slash its population by two – thirds. That's deeper than was originally expected. Overall... the federal department of labor placing a freeze on new students at 125 – job corps centers nationwide.
Work could begin soon on a $10 – million project... upgrading traffic signals and adding a turn lane on the Airport Beltway near Hazleton. During a meeting in Hazleton Wednesday night... PennDOT officials said five traffic lights will be upgraded... as well as a turning lane added near the Laurel Mall. The project is expected to be wrapped up sometime next year.
Anywhere between 45 days and 18 months in jail. That's the sentence 57 – year old Suzanne Thomas received for shooting and killing a neighbor's dog in Derry Township in Montour County. Thomas says she was justified in eliminating the yellow lab a year ago when the dog allegedly killed one of her rabbits. In addition to the jail time... Thomas must also preform community service and provide restitution. She must report to the Montour County Jail by Monday
Sandusky Looses Bid
Jerry Sandusky lost a bid for a new trial Wednesday when a judge rejected his argument that his lawyers were not given enough time to prepare for the three-week proceeding that ended with a 45-count guilty verdict. Judge John Cleland's 27-page order said lawyers for the former Penn State assistant football coach conceded that their post-trial review turned up no material that would have changed their trial strategy. Sandusky is serving a 30- to 60-year state prison sentence on a child sex abuse conviction.
The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams played East Stroudsburg Wednesday night. The results were mixed according to WHLM's Jim Doyle. In the women's game the Huskies defeated East Stroudsburg 86 to 43. In the men's contest... East Stroudsburg got a grip on the game... downing the Huskies 77 to 68. In their next game, the Huskies play at Kutztown Saturday afternoon.

In boys high school basketball Wednesday night... Bloomsburg defeated Benton 61 – 44... it was Danville over Shamokin 58 – 44... Hughesville just getting by Southern Columbia 45 – 42... Central Columbia downed Warrior Run 65 – 47... and it was Sullivan County over Millville 67 – 32..
Wednesday night in the NBA... The Philadelphia 76ers defeated The Washington Wizards 92 – 84.
