Weather

The commute to work Monday morning was touch and go. The National Weather Service in State College posted a winter weather advisory for much central and eastern Pennsylvania... including Columbia and Montour Counties. Snow started falling around 4 Monday morning with it changing to freezing rain.... then rain. PennDOT was out overnight pre – treating major highways with salt brine to keep the water from freezing on roadway surfaces. Monday night... the rough weather continues with drizzle and fog.

 

Water Problems

United Water crews spent Monday morning repairing a six inch in diameter water main which broke overnight... shutting off water to homes along a portion of Lightstreet Road. The utility's Bob Manbeck says the crew dug up the street... then simply placed a clamp over the leaking portion of the pipe. It's believed cold weather played a factor in damaging the pipe... as well as several others around Bloomsburg since Sunday afternoon.

 

Millard / Revenues

State Representative David Millard has keeping a sharp eye on the amount of money coming into the state... and going out. The Millville Republican says December income beat expectations to the tune of $112 – million when compared to 2011... and that means the state treasury is $171 - million to the good. Meantime, Millard has been selected to chair a subcommittee on education funding through the house appropriations committee.... a committee to look at school funding and pension reform.

 

Bicentennial Celebration

Columbia County's 200th birthday is right around the corner.... March 22nd and 23rd …. to be exact... and preparation is coming together to celebrate breaking away from Northumberland County in 1813. On Saturday the 23rd... the day starts with a 5K run / walk... events at the Fairgrounds... as well as a parade through the heart of Bloomsburg... so says BU's Jimmie Gilliland. He suggest that non – profit groups... businesses and municipal government build a small floats... dress up or in Gilliland's words... “do something paradeish. The event forms at the Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital parking lot at midday on March 23rd.

 

Gas Prices

The price of gasoline is slowly creeping upward. The Triple A Fuel Gauge report out this morning shows gas six cents higher than it was a week ago all across northeastern Pennsylvania. At the pump... the price for self – serve, unleaded regular is checking in at an average of $3.56 a gallon... up a penny from the weekend. The reason... high crude oil prices.

 

Kulpmont Fire

A fire marshal is expected to walk through the ruins of a house in Kulpmont in Northumberland County. Flames breaking out around 5 O'clock Monday morning at a home on Chestnut Street. PennDOT says a section of Route 61 between 8th and 12th Streets in Kulpmont will be closed through early Monday evening.

 

Hazleton Fire

A home in the 1300 block of north Church Street in Hazleton is being treated as a crime scene. The woman who lived in the house is dead.... and a man was injured in the Sunday evening fire. Authorities say the woman was not responsive when pulled from the burning building... while the man was flown to the burn center at the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown. Their names have not been released. Investigators are on scene trying to figure out what happened.

 

Rush Twp. Fire

Still no word as to what started a fire that destroyed a family home on Crest Haven Road... near Route 54 in Northumberland County's Rush Township Saturday night. Marvin and Janelle Eshbach... and their four children... were not at home when the fire broke out. It's believed to have started in the breezeway of the ranch – style home. The family is now staying with relatives.

 

Butler Twp. Explosion

The power is back on in Butler Township near Hazleton... after a malfunctioning transformer exploded Sunday afternoon. When the transformer on Four Seasons Drive in the Beech Mountain Lakes area exploded... about a thousand PPL subscribers were tossed into the dark. Also going dark was the stop light at busy State Route 309 and Butler Drive. PPL crews had the problem taken care of quickly.

 

Hazleton Ice Rink

Could there be an outdoor ice skating rink in Hazleton's future. That could be the case if State Representative Tarah Toohil has her way. Right now... the 116th District Republican is looking for a suitable area. Toohil is working with a Hazleton area hockey league... and city officials to make the proposal a reality.

 

Commissioners Request

County commissioners across the state are calling for an extension of a human services block grant program beyond the 20 counties already participating in a pilot. The program gives commissioners some flexibility to shift money among seven programs with fewer state requirement. Commissioners say it's working... and should be available to all counties that want to participate.

Monday HS Basketball

There is boys high school basketball on the WHLM Stations Monday night. Central Columbia welcomes Hughesville to the district's Elementary School gymnasium. The last time these two teams met... Hughesville snatched the win by four points. Catch the action on the WHLM Stations beginning with the pre – game show at 7:15.

 

BU Wrestling

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team is very likely to move up in the Division one national rankings after Friday's 19-18 win over 15th ranked Edinboro. The Huskies were ranked 19th prior to that match. Bloomsburg now has a dual meet record of 12 and 2. Their next match is Saturday afternoon at Cleveland State.
