Berwick Meth Lab

Berwick police busted a suspected meth lab last night... taking three people into custody. This time the lab was in an apartment in a residential area at the corner of Fourth and Chestnut Streets. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 is reporting probation officers were checking on 30 – year old Michael Olah when the lab was discovered. In addition to Olah... the Press – Enterprise is reporting in Friday's edition Samuel Konrad and Heather Wynnings were also taken into custody. They're expected to be charged.
 

Bicentennial Celebration

Columbia County will be celebrating it's 200th birthday the weekend of March 22nd... and plans are being made for a 5K run... a big parade through downtown Bloomsburg... and fireworks at the fairgrounds. County Commissioner David Kovach says those involved are trying to make the celebration as big and unique as possible. A planning meeting dealing with the bicentennial celebration will be held next Wednesday at the Caldwell Consistory in Bloomsburg.

 

Central Money

The fund raising drive for a new athletic complex... for use by the public... on the campus of Central Columbia High School on Old Berwick Road has reached the million dollar mark. That word from Superintendent Harry Mathias. The drive has been underway since last October with most of the donations coming from foundations and businesses. The money will be used to fund a new athletic building.... replacing the turf on the football field... as well as installing lights on a heavily – used baseball diamond.

 

Leadership Central Penn

What does it take to be a journalist these days and how has the business of reporting has changed. That was the main point driven home by three area journalists who appeared before the current class of Leadership Central Penn meeting in Bloomsburg Thursday. Jim Sachetti, the editor of the Press – Enterprise... Metrocast's Doug Farley... and WHLM's Mark Williams gave the class an outline of what the job requires. Donna Eyerly of the Foundation of the Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce... says she found out it's not an easy job. The current class of Leadership Central Penn are getting an opportunity to explore areas in depth... such as the media... and the workings of local government.

 

Wilkes - Barre Shooting

One man is dead and another man shot in the head in a shooting in a residential neighborhood on Scott Street early Thursday morning. Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis identifies the victim as 42 year old Leroy Michael Smith Wilkes Barre. Police finding him in the 100 block of Scott Street. A second man... 20 – year old Jamal Martin was also discovered shot in the head. He's being treated at a Plains Township Hospital. Meantime, a man was found shot in the stomach outside a grocery store on Coal Street Thursday afternoon. He's being treated at a Wilkes – Barre hospital. No one is in custody.

 

Ostrowski Plea

At one time he was the head football coach at Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes – Barre... but now he's a convicted felon. 29 – year old Joseph Ostrowski pleading guilty in federal court to child pornography and cyber stalking charges. Sentencing will take place at a later date.

 

Luzerne Deputy

A Luzerne County deputy is hurting a bit after he was involved in a traffic accident in Dorrance Township this week. State police say 57 – year old Jerry Van Hoorn of Hazleton received a gash to the head when his county owned SUV sideswiped a utility poll on snow – covered North Main Road. He was treated and released at a Plains Township hospital. The K-9 cop riding with him was not injured.

 

Lawsuit

A new court filing says the NCAA has agreed not to spend the $12 - million paid to it under a consent agreement with Penn State over the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal. A Pennsylvania judge on Wednesday put on hold a request by state Sen. Jake Corman for an injunction citing a request by both Corman and the college sports' governing body. Corman's lawsuit argues that the NCAA's plans to spend $60 - million over five years from Penn State runs afoul of his oversight role in state spending.

In girls' high school basketball Thursday night... Dallas defeated Berwick 36 – 18.... and Benton downed Columbia Montour Vo Tech 68 – 37.

 

Boys HS Basketball

Among Friday night's boys high school basketball games, Bloomsburg was at South Williamsport. The Panthers beat South in that game 71-57. You can hear all the details from Friday's game with Jim Doyle in the WHLM High School Hoops Update:

 

 

BU Basketball

After three straight home games, the Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams are on the road Saturday afternoon at Cheyney. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show to the women's game at 12:40.

 

BU Wrestling

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team is now ranked 20th in the nation in Division One. Sunday afternoon at 2, the Huskies take on Ohio University at the Nelson Field House. Bloomsburg now has a dual meet record of 10 and 2.
