Winter Weather Advisory
We could be in for a rough weekend... now that the National Weather Service in State College has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Saturday. It includes all of central Pennsylvania... including Columbia and Montour Counties. We could get anywhere from 2 to 4 inches of snow starting Saturday morning... just before daybreak... from a system coming out of the southwest. That may make it a slow – go for travel Saturday... as snow could be heavy at times... cutting down visibility to a quarter – mile.
Folks were busy on Thursday.... removing snow from roadways... sidewalks as well parking lots and streets. We caught up with some snow blower action at the corner of 3rd and Iron Streets in Bloomsburg Thursday morning. Although it appeared the snow wasn't deep enough... the blower made quick work of what was on the ground.
Fair Grounds Assessment
The Bloomsburg Fair Association says they're seeking relief on the property taxes they pay every year on their five parcels of land, which make up the fairgrounds. Right now... the board is paying an estimated $150,000 a year on an assessment of $5 – million dollars. They would like to see it reduced by $100,000. Board Association member David Millard says there are other revenue streams that can provide tax money to local governments and schools. Association attorney Jeff Hill recently filed an appeal for lower taxation. A pre-hearing on the issue is scheduled for January 29th.
The operator of a Wilkes – Barre towing company and several other businessmen are offering a reward in order to find the driver of a car which killed a 5 – year old boy last Friday night. The group is pledging $1,500 to find the driver of a red, Pontiac Grand Am who struck and killed Kevin Miller of Dallas... and then fled the scene. The incident happened a week ago on North Street as the little boy and his family left a party.
Plane Crash Update
The pilot of that single – engine Piper Cherokee which crashed in northern Lycoming county last weekend remains in serious condition at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Authorities say Vincent Mow of Waukesha, Wisconsin was behind the controls of the plane when it went down Sunday... off Route 44... near the Potter County line. The FAA says Mow was on his way to a Kingston, New York airport when the plane went down... scattering Christmas packages across the debris field. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
The Pennsylvania State Police say seven people were killed on the state highways over the Christmas holiday. Of the 1,300 crashes.... 315 people were injured. A PSP spokesperson says 108 of the crashes were alcohol related... including one of the fatalities... and two of the seven people who died were not wearing seat belts. In 2011... five people died in Christmas holiday crashes.
YMCA Walk / Run
What a way to usher out the old year.... and ring in 2013 with the Bloomsburg YMCA's 11th annual 5 K walk / run through the streets of the town. The “Y's” executive director Roger Brown says just over 400 people competed last year.... and more are expected this year. The event will get underway 7 O'clock Monday night... with the start / finish line in front of the YMCA building on 7th Street in Bloomsburg.
The Hazleton City Council has tentatively approved its operating budget for 2013. During a special meeting Thursday... council okayed the plan proposed by Mayor Joseph Yanuzzi... which includes a 83% tax hike. But in order to get the plan through council.... the Police Department loses $175,000 in funding. Other departments getting cut are the fire department... code enforcement... public works... as well as contracted engineering services. Now the plan must be okayed during second and third readings. That could take place before Monday.... with the budget expected to be okayed by December 31st.
The Luzerne County government is in a cash squeeze... so the Council has okayed a plan loan itself $916,000 from the county's domestic relations account. Right now... the county has $1.5 - million dollars in it's treasury to pay bills... and the money borrowed from domestic relations plus a $2 – million dollar transfer from a landfill account will allow the county to pay $4.4 million dollars in bills now due.
The Department of General Services has launched a new website to assist contractors, subcontractors and state and local government bodies bidding public works projects in meeting the requirements of the Public Works Employment Verification Act. That new law goes into effect the first of the year. The measure was signed by Governor Corbett last summer... and it requires those working in the construction business to verify the employment eligibility of each new employee.
A high-ranking state senator has proposed a new law that would keep Penn State’s $60 - million NCAA fine over the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal within Pennsylvania. Republican Senator Jake Corman, who represents State College, said much of the money was generated within the state, so he believes the child abuse prevention grants it is earmarked for should be distributed for... what he calls... the betterment of Pennsylvanians. Corman said he hoped lawmakers would act quickly on his proposal, as the school has already made its first $12 million payment. He also plans to ask a court to prevent any of that initial payment from being released to organizations outside Pennsylvania.
A 32 – year old Watsontown man is accused of breaking into a house... and taking up residence. Lynn Davis is charged by Point Township police in Northumberland County with facing a long list of charges after he was spotted earlier this month on the back porch of a home on Susquehanna Trial. After several attempts to catch Davis.... police apprehended him... after finding contents inside the home which did not belong to him. He was arraigned... and sent to the Northumberland County Jail.
Evans / Pro Bowl
Former Bloomsburg University All American Jahri Evans has been named to the NFL Pro Bowl for the 4th consecutive season. Evans has started 111 straight games at right guard for the New Orleans Saints and is currently tied for the fifth longest streak of games started among active NFL players.

In boys high school basketball Thursday night, in the Pine Grove Tournament... Mahanoy Area defeating Danville 53 to 48.
Boys HS Tournament
The Southern Columbia boys will host a Holiday Tournament starting Friday night. In the first game at 6 O'clock.... Milton fell to North Schuylkill 50-46. Judy Knorr Tournament
The Judy Knorr Girls basketball tournament begins Friday night in Berwick. In the first game at 6 O'clock... Central Columbia plays Selinsgrove followed by Berwick against Bethlehem Freedom.
