Folks were busy on Thursday.... removing snow from roadways... sidewalks as well parking lots and streets. We caught up with some snow blower action at the corner of 3rd and Iron Streets on Thursday morning. Although it appeared the snow wasn't deep enough... the blower made quick work of what was on the ground. Now... the National Weather Service out of State College says we can expect anywhere from a dusting to two inches of snow during Saturday.
The Bloomsburg Fair Association says they're seeking relief on the property taxes they pay every year on their five parcels of land which make up the fairgrounds. Right now... the board is paying an estimated $150,000 a year on an assessment of $5 – million dollars. They would like to see it reduced by $100,000. Board Association member David Millard says there are other revenue streams that can provide tax money to local governments and schools. Association attorney Jeff Hill recently filed an appeal for lower taxation. A pre-hearing on the issue is scheduled for January 29th.
The operator of a Wilkes – Barre towing company and several other businessmen is offering a reward in order to find the driver of a car which killed a 5 – year old boy last Friday night. Bob Kadluboski says his group is pledging 15 – hundred dollars to find the driver of a red, Pontiac Grand Am who struck and killed Kevin Miller of Dallas... and then fled the scene. The incident happened a week ago on North Street as he and his family left a party.
The Pennsylvania State Police say seven people were killed on the state's highways over the Christmas holiday. Of the 1,300 hundred crashes.... 315 people were injured. A PSP spokesperson says 108 of the crashes were alcohol related... including one of the fatalities... and two of the seven people who died were not wearing seat belts. In 2011... five people died in Christmas holiday crashes.
Gas prices across northeastern Pennsylvania are holding steady. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging $3.42 – a - gallon... the same as it was earlier this week... as well as a week ago. A month ago... we were paying an averaging $3.57 a gallon.
Will the records be destroyed. The lawyer handling the bankruptcy of Centax... Luzerne County's former tax collection agency... says there is no money to pay for records storage... and wants to have the records destroyed. So... he's seeking an okay from the court. But, Luzerne County says that's not such a good idea... since the company still owes the county and municipalities an estimated $9 – million dollars. It includes property and school district taxes for the first half of 2011.
DUI / Sullivan
A Sweet Valley man was arrested early Tuesday morning on a DUI charge. State Police at Laporte say 40 – year old Donald Space was stopped for a traffic violation near a convenience store. He was arrested for DUI and other traffic violations. Troopers say charges will be filed in a Sullivan County District Court.
