Millard / Budget

We're only half – way through the state's fiscal year... and already lawmakers in Harrisburg are trying to anticipate what Governor Corbett will included in his February budget message. During a recent interview... State Representative David Millard of Millville says money for on – going Mental Health and Retardation programs is a major concern... especially in the areas of unfunded mandates either from the state or federal governments. And Representative Millard says there have been meager or no increases in program funding the past several years.

 

Scott Twp Fire

Lightstreet and Espy firemen were called out early this morning to... what was first believed to be.. a structure fire in the 600 block of Crestwood Drive in Scott Township. Although it turned to be much less... reports from the scene indicate that a thermostat malfunctioned... sending an elderly couple into the chilly night air. Firemen arrived... checked the wall where thermostat was mounted for flame extensions... then ventilated the structure.

 

Plane Crash

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to be in northwest Lycoming County this Christmas Eve... trying to figure out how a single – engine airplane crashed in a wooded area. They want to know why the Piper fell out of the sky Sunday afternoon near Route 44 close to the Lycoming – Potter County line. The pilot survived... and was flown to Geisinger in Danville. He has not been identified, but a quick search of FAA records show the plane registered in Delaware.

 

Kidsburg Donation

A boost for the committee trying to build Kidsburg 2 – point – zero at the Bloomsburg Town Park. First Columbia Bank and Trust donating $50,000 to kick start their fund raising drive to make the park a reality. Committee organizer Deb Huckens says it's a pretty good feeling to get community support. First Columbia's donation comes just days after Kawneer and the Alcoa Foundation gave the committee $20,000... as well as the Mitrani Foundation coming through with a $10,000 check.

 

Wilkes – Barre Hit & Run

Police in up and down the Wyoming Valley continue their search for the driver of a red, two – door Pontiac Grand Am... with a sun roof and damage on the front end. The car and driver are wanted in connection with the hit and run death of five year Kevin Miller of Dallas in Wilkes – Barre late Friday night. The child and his family had just left a party when he was struck. He died later at a hospital.

 

Hazleton Grants

Five Hazleton area group have received grants from the Luzerne Foundation. Overall 15 grants were given across the county... and were chosen from 67 applicants. The grants were given to groups dealing with child sexual abuse to a veterans assistance program.

 

Freeland Streetscape

Freeland... in Luzerne County... is in the middle of it's Streetscape project and it needs more money to finish it... so the Borough Council is turning to the Local Share Account. That's the group which manages gaming revenues from state casinos. During a council meeting over the weekend... it was determined they need $400,000 for crosswalks... sidewalks... lighting and landscaping. The application for the money to the Share Account must be submitted by the end of business Monday.

 

Schuylkill Meth Lab

A hit and run accident in a parking lot in neighboring Schuylkill County led to the discovery of a mobile meth lab. It happened in St. Clair on Sunday when a car hit a parked van... and when cops went to speak to the driver... they discovered the man passed out and found evidence meth manufacturing.

Now... 39 year old Felix Ferrer of the Reading area is locked up... facing felony charges. One crime uncovered another in Schuylkill County. What started as a hit and run crash, led to the discovery of a meth lab.

HS Basketball

There are just two area high school basketball teams still unbeaten at this Christmas holiday break: the girls teams from Danville and Southern Columbia. Those teams meet at Southern Columbia on January 3rd. Both have one game before that.

 

NFL Sunday

The Washington Redskins defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 27 – 20... The Cincinnati Bengals beat the Steelers 13-10 in Pittsburgh... It was San Diego over the New York Jets 27 – 17... Also... the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants 33 – 14.

 

NBA

In the NBA Sunday... it was the Brooklyn Nets over the Philadelphia 76ers 95 - 92

 

College Football

The college football bowl season continues this afternoon with The Hawaii Bowl. Fresno State faces SMU.
