PPL Reactor Shutdown
Unit 2 at the PPL nuclear plant north of Berwick remains shut down Monday. The unit automatically shut down during routine testing of a valve on the main turbine system. A utility spokesman says all systems responded as expected... with the reactor in a safe and stable condition. Unit 1 continues to chug along... producing power and is no way effected by the shutdown of Unit 2.
Bloomsburg Fire Call
Bloomsburg firemen were called out shortly before 2:30 Monday morning when folks living in an apartment complex discovered smoke in one of the units. Firemen rushed to 424 Chestnut Avenue... and the source of the smoke had firemen stumped for a few minutes. Assistant Deputy Chief Scott McBride said the filter was plugged with dirt and debris... eventually burning out the furnace motor. As a precaution people living in the complex were evacuated... while firemen found the source for the smoke. Then they simply ventilated the smoke from the one unit Chestnut Street complex.
Sales tax revenue coming into the state during November took a bit of a slide. That word from State Representative David Millard of Millville. How 'bout to the tune of $23.2 - million below anticipated revenues. It's money used to fund the current state budget. But, Millard said revenues should rebound when the December figures are in... putting the state on an even keel for the second half of the fiscal year.
This is the time of year there is a lot of drinking... and some may get behind the wheel of their car instead of having a designated driver. That's where law enforcement plays a part in establishing checkpoints... as well as having roving patrols... so says David Everly with the PA Traffic Safety Enforcement Resource Center in Pottsville. Everly says checkpoints will be established during the holiday season in Columbia and Montour Counties... mainly along Route 11 and 487.... and Route 54 near Danville.
An autopsy will be performed on the body of a Millville man found dead in a school bus parking lot at the start of the weekend. Authorities said 57 – year old Julian Bixler didn't have any signs of foul play... and had been suffering from health issues for some time. Bixler's body was found by a school bus driver and her young son who had just completed her afternoon route.
Kiddie Porn Charge
The case of a 27 – year old Hazleton man... accused of downloading and viewing kiddie porn.. is headed to Luzerne County Court. Jhow Calderon faces a long list of charges following his arrest last month. Calderon and a second man... arrested at the same time... remain in the Luzerne County Prison.
Sugarloaf Twp Budget
Sugarloaf Township supervisors will vote on their proposed 2013 budget when they meet in special session on the 27th of the month. It calls for no tax increase... because supervisors said it wasn't necessary. Between now and the 27th... the proposal is open for pubic review.
The Bloomsburg University wrestling team lost to 7th ranked Missouri 22-9 Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden in New York City as part of the Grapple at the Garden. It was the first ever collegiate wrestling event at the world famous arena. The Huskies now have a record of 6 and 2. They will be at home Tuesday night against Buffalo.
Bloomsburg University's All American running back Franklyn Quiteh finished third in the voting for the Harlon Hill Award which goes to the nation's top Division II football player. The award was given to Shippensburg University quarterback Zack Zulli. Both Quiteh and Zulli are juniors.
In the NFL on Sunday.... the Atlanta Falcons beat the New York Giants 34 – nothing. In overtime... the Dallas Cowboys got by the Pittsburgh Steelers 27 – 24. Monday night... the New York Jets play the Titans in Tennessee.
In the NBA Sunday... the Los Angeles Lakers took the measure of the Philadelphia 76er's 111 – 98.
