Benton police are investigating an attempted child abduction. It happened Tuesday afternoon with a 7 – year old boy telling police two men approached him at the corner of Main and North Streets...with the pair offering him candy. The child got away... telling police the men were in a rusty, red pick – up truck with a silver tool box in the bed. If you have information about the attempted child abduction...call police.
Briar Creek Twp Burglary
Briar Creek Township police are looking for two people...wanted in connection with a daylight burglary along Twin Church Road near Summerhill. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... homeowner Lou DiPippa surprised the pair as he arrived home Wednesday morning. That's when they pepper – sprayed DiPippa and got away in a gray – colored SUV. The thieves ransacking the home and getting away with some cash. The burglary in Briar Creek Township is just the latest in a series of break – in's across the area.
No new taxes.... those words coming from Governor Corbett to state lawmakers as they get ready to tackle the Commonwealth's 2013 – 2014 budget. State Representative David Millard of Millville sits on the House Appropriations Committee... and says the Governor means what he says. Representative Millard says the proposed budget will probably look like this year's spending plan... with programs getting level funding... without any kind of an increase in dollars.
PPL Rate Increase
Customers of PPL Electric Utilities will see monthly bills increase by about 4% next year. It's due to recent state Public Utility Commission action. The PUC granting Allentown-based PPL a 10.4 % rate of return on income for shareholders. The approval will increase the average bill for residential customers using 1,000 kilowatts of electricity monthly by about $4.77 to $116.37. The increase totals approximately $71 – million.
Congressman Lou Barletta... who represents Columbia County in Washington... has been given a new committee assignment. Once he's sworn in for his second term next month... he'll take a seat as a member of the Committee on Homeland Security. That committee is responsible for boarder security... protecting the country from terrorist attacks... responding to disasters... and national security infrastructure. Mr. Barletta will come off the Committee on Small Business to accept his new assignment.
We hear them in the air just about every day.... Geisinger Health System's Life Flight helicopters headed to emergency medical calls. Since it's inception in 1981... it's been through contracts with various organizations who supplied the personnel. But now... Life Flight has received it's Federal Aviation Administrations Air Carrier Certificate... and they're bringing the program in – house... so says program manager Jerry Splitt. He says Geisinger will now hire the pilots... maintenance crews and aviation support personnel. The six helicopters based across northeastern Pennsylvania averaging 2,600 flights a year.
Ralpho Township has a new 2013 budget. Township supervisors approving a $1.3 - million budget this week. Property owners will see an estimated tax increase of between $20 and $25. Supervisors say the budget is roughly the same as 2012.
Mountain Top Fire
Wright Township firemen... north of Hazleton... had their hands full Wednesday afternoon... battling a house fire on Route 309. Jack and Amy Gentilesco... and their cats... escaped the flames. Investigators are trying to figure out what started the blaze.
Authorities have snagged the man believed to be responsible for a late Tuesday night hold up at a Wilkes – Barre Deli. Bashier Edwards is believed to have robbed a deli on Blackman Street... taking off with an unknown amount of cash. He was later found in a stolen car in Plains Township... with a stolen handgun in his possession. Edwards is now in the Luzerne County Prison.

The Bloomsburg high school boys basketball team played their home opener last night. The Shamokin Indians came calling... but at the final buzzer... the Panthers defeated Shamokin 74 – 54. In other boys games Wednesday night... Selinsgrove downed Central Columbia 54 to 46.... And: Freeland MMI defeated Benton 48 to 38...
