The Town of Bloomsburg is on a buying binge... purchasing flood damaged homes in the 900 block of West Main Street. Town Administrator Bill Lowthert says one house was acquired last week... a second Monday... with six other properties expected to be acquired by the end of the week. That leaves three homes to be acquired... something the town hopes to consummate by the end of December. Total cost.. an estimated $800,000 which will be reimbursed by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.
Pennsylvania State Police are trying to find the culprits who broke into vending machines at Interstate 80 rest areas in Columbia and Montour... as well as Luzerne County. The latest rash of break – in's took place over the weekend. Not only did the thieves steal thousands of dollars... they caused hundreds... if not thousands of dollars worth of damage. The machines are owned by Williamsport – based North Central Sight Services... and the money is used for programs designed for the visually impaired. If you have information about the break – in's... call State Police.
Gas prices across northeastern Pennsylvania are holding steady... but it's dropped five cents a gallon over the past week. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows the current price for self – serve unleaded regular is $3.48 a gallon... the same as it was over the weekend... but down from $3.53 a week ago. During the past month... gas is down an average of 10 cents a gallon.

The committee trying to get Kidsburg 2.0 built in Bloomsburg Town Park recently received it's first big donation. The $20,000 check coming from Kawneer of Bloomsburg and the Alcoa Foundation. Organizer Deb Huckens hopes it's just the first of many big donations. Ms. Huckens and her committee want to construct Kidsburg 2.0 to replace the original Kidsburg built in the early 90's... and lost to the flood of 2011.
Still no suspects in custody in connection with a stabbing at a Hanover Township bar near Nanticoke over the weekend. One man was stabbed in the stomach at the Slate Bar on the San Souci Parkway Saturday night. The unidentified victim was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Penn State will make the first of five payments to its $60 - million fine to the NCAA next week. The money from the fine, paid out over five years, will be used to create an endowment that will support programs on child sexual abuse prevention and victims services. It was part of the punishment leveled on Penn State by the NCAA in the fallout of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.
Bloomsburg University's junior running back Franklyn Quiteh has been selected as a first team All American by the American Football Coaches Association. Quiteh led the nation in rushing and touchdowns. He is one of three finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy that goes to the nation's top Division II player. That award will be announced on Friday.
