Sitler Funeral

Funeral services will be held Thursday in Benton for a murder victim. 53 – year old Darlene Sitler was gunned down over the weekend at a Coudersport Church... in Potter County... allegedly by her ex – husband. Ms. Sitler grew up in Benton... and was involved in the district's music program before graduating in the late 70's... eventually working the past thirty years for the Northern Potter County School District. Ms. Sitler's funeral to take place at 11 O'clock at the Dean Kriner Funeral Home.

 

Alleged Burglar Arrested

A Danville area man is in the Columbia County Prison... charged with allegedly stealing items from unlocked cars... then selling them for drugs. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition 23 – year old Michael Crossley of Liberty Township allegedly made off with an estimated $2,200 worth of consumer electronic goods from unlocked cars in the Foxtail sub-division in Hemlock Township last month. Crossley was arrested Wednesday at a Perry Avenue mobile home. He was remanded to the prison in lieu of $35,000 bail.

 

Upgraded Charges for Anchor's Husband

Charges have been upgraded in that case against a former Scranton school director... who is the husband of a Channel 16 news anchor. A federal grand jury indicting Mark Kandel with several counts of online enticement stemming from messages he allegedly sent to two minors on the internet and a cell phone. Kandel is the husband of WNEP – TV news anchor Marisa Burke... originally from Riverside. He was arraigned in Scranton federal court on Wednesday... and jailed. His trial is expected to begin in February.

 

Route 11 Work

PennDOT crews have been busy this week sealing cracks on the surface of Route 11... starting at Bloomsburg and going north to the Briar Creek Township line. The agency's Rick Mason says the maintenance work is business as usual. Mason said the work was only to take five days.... but it appears the project will be extended through next week due to inclement weather earlier in the week.

 

Ordered to Prison

A former Luzerne County Community College dean has been ordered to prison January 3rd. 61 – year old Peter Moses was convicted two years ago of stealing an estimated $17,000 from the school's cafeteria... and making off with two laptop computers. The order was issued after the state Supreme Court rejected an appeal of his conviction.

 

Carbon County

Property owners in Carbon County may have to dig deeper into their checkbook to pay their taxes next year. The county's proposed budget calls for a 58 % property tax increase... all in an attempt to close a forecast $6 – million dollar shortfall. Carbon County Commissioners will vote on the plan December 20th.

 

Montour County

Montour County commissioners say they'll meet in Danville the 27th of the month to approve the proposed 2013 budget. The new spending plan calls for no property tax increases... but contains a 2 % cost of living raise for all county employees... including commissioners. What's helping make ends meet is a planned $193,000 surplus from the current budget.

 

Santa

Jolly old St. Nick.... also known as Santa Claus... returns to his cottage in front of the Bloomsburg Diner Thursday night. Ever since his arrival during the WHLM Parade of Lights... he has chatted with a lot of kids. Santa will have hours at his cottage in front of the Diner at Main and East Streets every Thursday and Friday night... as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Men Swimming

The Bloomsburg University men's swimming team concluded the first stint of its season with a record-breaking performance at the Zippy Invitational at Akron University last weekend. It lifted the team to 21st in the latest Endless Polls Top 25 poll published by CollegeSwimming.com. During the event... the Huskies broke eight school records and posted five NCAA-qualifying times. Meantime... the Bloomsburg University women's swimming team has jumped into the national spotlight as it is ranked 20th.. according to CollegeSwimming.com. During the same Zippy Invitational... the the women set two school-records and posting six NCAA-qualifying times.

 

Baseball

It's not too early to think about baseball. Bloomsburg University will host a baseball coaching clinic on Sunday, Jan. 6 in preparation for the 2013 season. The speakers at the clinic include Gregg Legg... a former member of the Philadelphia Phillies... and Del Mintz, the Phillies' northeast scout.

 

Villanova – Temple

Scottie Randall scored 21 points and Anthony Lee had 16 to lead unbeaten Temple to a 76-61 win over Villanova Wednesday night.

 

Thursday Night Football

In the NFL Thursday night.... the Denver Broncos are in Oakland to take on the Raiders in Thursday night football.

 

76er's

The Philadelphia 76er's have Thursday night off. But, they'll hit the hardwood Friday night when Boston comes to town.
