Former Benton Woman Dead
A former Benton woman is dead was allegedly shot to death by her ex – husband during a church service Sunday in Coudersport... in Potter County. 53 – year old Darlene Sitler was shot as she played the organ during a church service... allegedly at the hand of her ex – husband... 52 – year old Greg Eldred. CoudyNews.com says Eldred fired two shots from a handgun before he was subdued by congregation members and hustled away by police. The pair divorced 2 – years ago following 20 – years of marriage.
Woman Pleads in Dog Death
A Montour County woman could be jailed up to five years and fined $10,000 after she pleaded guilty to shooting and killing a Labrador Retriever last January. 57 – year old Suzanne Thomas admitted to putting the one and a half year old dog down after the animal allegedly killed one of her pet rabbits at her Derry Township home. But owner James White says it didn't make sense... since the Lab friendly to his kids and pets. Thomas will be sentenced at a later date in Montour County Court.
Drugs / Leipold
The manufacturing of meth has become a problem in the Berwick area. Numerous arrests have been made over the past few months in order to stem the problem. Columbia County District Attorney Tom Leipold says the main reason that Berwick has become the center of the meth trade in the region is the availability of ingredients... and people to seek out those ingredients. Leipold said distribution isn't a problem since Berwick is close to Hazleton and Wilkes – Barre.... as well as the interstate highway system.
We all dodged a bullet last week when we got a light dusting of snow.... a prelude of what may happen this winter. Many of us are prepared for anything Mother Nature may toss our way.... but is PennDOT ?? You bet... so says the agency's David Thompson who said District 3, which makes up Columbia and Montour Counties has 220 plow trucks... 481 full time operators and tons of salt and anti – skid material. And since last winter was so mild.... PennDOT's Thompson says the agency has saved millions of dollars... rolling that money over to the 2012 – 2013 winter season.
Hazleton Fire Folo
Investigators say an electrical problem may have sparked that weekend fire in Hazleton which extensively damaged a six unit apartment building. The complex is located at North Cedar near Green Streets. Eleven people... including three kids were displaced by the fire. They're being helped by the Hazleton Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Wilkes - Barre Firefighters
Firefighters in Wilkes – Barre say they'll picket outside City Hall Tuesday in response to the furloughs of 11 firemen last week. Mayor Tom Leighton not only furloughed the 11, but four public works employees as well... all in an effort to close a budget gap through the end of the year. The move became a reality when there weren't enough city employees to voluntarily take furloughs between now and the end of the year.
NEPA Gas Prices
The price of a gallon of self – serve, unleaded regular gas is dropping a bit. The latest Triple – A Fuel Gauge report show prices across northeastern Pennsylvania has dropped to $3.53 a gallon.... down a penny from the weekend... and down four cents from a week ago. Overall... unleaded regular has dropped five cents a gallon in the last thirty days.
Older Pennsylvanians are reminded that the deadline for Medicare annual enrollment is this Friday. The Pennsylvania Department of Aging says individuals are urged to utilize the state Department's APPRISE program to determine a Medicare health plan that works for them. The APPRISE program has trained volunteers who work through the local Area Agencies on Aging. They deal with questions and concerns of older adults and provide clear and concise information to help choose the right Medicare health or prescription plan.
Something new in schools this year. High School Juniors began taking the Keystone exams on Monday.The New test replaces the 11th grade Pennsylvania System of School Assessment exam.... and focuses on Algebra 1.... literature and biology. Starting with the class of 2017... the exams must be passed in order to graduate.
Bloomsburg University's University Store has been nominated for the 2013 Collegiate Retailer of the Year Award. Through the National Association of College Stores, the Collegiate Retailer of the Year Award recognizes the highest level of retailing excellence. Nationwide, only 51 stores have been nominated, including BU.
Bloomsburg University's senior guard Dana Weiller is the PSAC Eastern Division player of the week. Weiller had a total of 34 points in Husky wins over Slippery Rock and defending PSAC Champion Edinboro. She is averaging 15.8 points a game and is fifth in school history with 1,537 points. The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team is unbeaten in five games. The Huskies play at Millersville Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock.
High School Basketball
The high school basketball season tips off Friday night. The first broadcast on the WHLM stations will a boys game with Danville taking on Pottsville at the McCloskey Center in Danville. You can catch all the action starting with the pregame show at 7:10.
