Millard Talks State

We've been talking a lot about the looming state pension crisis, which is a $41-billion dollar problem. State Representative addressed that issue on the WHLM Morning Buzz saying that changes for future employees is among the most serious considerations. The two groups affected by the pension crisis are state employees and public school employees. The first day of state session is January 1st in Harrisburg.

 

Bloomsburg Fire

Bloomsburg firemen had their hands full Thursday night when a blaze extensively damaged an apartment building at 239 Iron Street.... near Pine Avenue. The apartment is primarily student housing. Reports from the scene indicate the fire began in a second floor apartment... with flames spotted coming through the windows. Firemen had the flames under control within thirty minutes of arriving on the scene. Reports say at least six people are going to need help from Bloomsburg University's Campus Life for shelter.

 

Road Work Next Week

A PennDOT maintenance crew in Columbia County is scheduled to perform crack sealing operations along a section of route 11 next week. The crew will seal pavement cracks along the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 11 in Scott and South Centre townships, starting at the north end of Bloomsburg and continuing to the Briar Creek Township line. Traffic patterns will switch daily, with traffic shifted into the center turning lane. Work will begin Monday and finish by Friday, weather permitting.

 

PA Health Care

Pennsylvania's health care facilities continue to show declines in the number of healthcare associated infections. Both the number and rate of healthcare associated infections declined last year by more than 3% overall. The report looks at three benchmark categories; catheter associated urinary tract infections, central lien blood stream infections and surgical site infections.

 

PPL Susquehanna

PPL has restarted Unit 2 at the Susquehanna nuclear plant north of Berwick on Thursday after repairing a hydraulic system associated with the unit's main turbine. The leak was discovered a little more than a week ago when operators tried to restart the unit after a shutdown for repairs to the turbine blades. Unit 2 is now producing electricity for the interconnected power grid.

 

Crash Victims Names

We now know the names of two individuals involved in the crash that killed a Nanticoke man Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say Mark Lacey of Nanticoke was killed when his car crossed the center line along Route 11 in Salem Township...and reports state that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The driver of the SUV that was injured is Doreen Chacke of Plymouth who is in stable condition after the crash.


BU Store Nominated

Bloomsburg University's University Store has been nominated for the 2013 Collegiate Retailer of the Year Award. The National Association of College Stores recognizes the highest level of retailing excellence through the award. Nationwide only 51 stores have been nominated. One college store will be recognized for the award and receive $5,000 every two years. Beth Christian, manager of University Store, says the use of the prize would be determined by the Community Government Association.

Ironmen Travel to Hershey

The Danville High School football team has one day of practice left before tomorrow's Class AA state quarterfinal game against unbeaten Wyomissing at Hershey Park Stadium. That game kicks off at noon. Coverage on the whlm stations begins at 11:30 with the pregame show.

 

BU Football

Bloomsburg University's junior offensive lineman Brian Clarke is one of eight finalists for the 2012 Gene Upshaw Division 2 lineman of the year award. Clarke helped the Huskies break the PSAC single season team rushing record this past season.

 

BU Basketball

The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams will play their first PSAC games this weekend at the Nelson Field House. Tomorrow afternoon, the teams play Slippery Rock, and Sunday afternoon they play Edinboro. Both days, the women's game starts at 1 followed by the men's game at 3. Saturday you can hear the men's game on the whlm stations starting with The Husky Warmup Show at 2:40. Sunday, you hear both games against Edinboro starting with the pregame show to the women's game at 12:40. Both the Edinboro and Bloomsburg women's teams are nationally ranked. Edinboro is 15th in the nation and the Huskies are 25th.
