PennDot crews were out pre-treating some of the region's major routes overnight in advance of the winter weather forecast. The solution lowers the freezing point of water and slows ore prevents ice from forming a bond with the pavement during the early stages of a storm. PennDOT reminds motorists to slow down and drive according to the conditions you encouter when a winter storm hits. You can also call 511 from any phone to check interstate traffic conditions before heading out.
A pair of Democrat-held state House seats will be up for grabs when special elections are announced. Allegheny County's Matt Smith was elected to the state Senate, and York County's Eugene DePasquale was elected Auditor General in November. Since both were also reelected as state Reps, their resignations are pending in the House. DePasquale says his decision to wait until the end of the year to resign was based partly on the odd calendar and rules for the state House. There's no word yet on when the special elections will be scheduled.
