The 2012 holiday season in Bloomsburg was ushered in at the start of the weekend with the WHLM Parade of Lights. The WHLM Buzz Mobile and the Bloomsburg High School Marching band led off the event... as it traveled down Lightstreet Road... to Main... and then Market Streets. The big event of the evening was the arrival of Santa Claus. Santa told us kids aren't really looking for a lot lately. He will have hours at his cottage on Main Street infront of the Bloomsburg Diner Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the holiday season.
PennDOT is launching a pair of voluntary, life-saving programs to help emergency responders access a victim's medical information and emergency contacts if they've been involved in a crash. Participants in the Yellow Dot program fill out a form an place it in their glovebox; a yellow dot on their rear window alerts responders to check for it. The Emergency Contact Information program allows license holders to login to a secure database and add emergency contacts -- viewable only to law enforcement. Governor Corbett says the programs use common sense.
Thanksgiving Shopping Weekend
An estimated record of 247 million shoppers hit stores and websites over the Thanksgiving weekend...that's up about 9% from last year. Between early Thanksgiving shopping, black friday, and small business Saturday shoppers spent on average $423 each...that's up from $398 in 2011. Today is the day known as cyber-monday where shoppers will go online to find deals.
Today is the official start of deer-hunting season in Pennsylvania. It's being called an unofficial state holiday as many school district are closed today for the occasion. In some Pennsylvania counties the Pennsylvania Game Commission has extablished new rules for hunters due to a neurological illness discovered in Adams County this fall. The commission says the disease has not been found in wild-white taild deer popluations anywhere in PA. The deer-hunting season will last for two weeks.
Hungry Hunters Lunch
If you're a hungry hunter Katy's church has the cure. They'll host their annual hungry hunters lunch today from 11 to 5...serving up hot soups, sandiwhces, desserts, and hot drinks. Proceeds benefit the rennovation of their church, which is located on Wolf Hollow Road in Madison Township.
Danville is the only area high school football team still alive in the state playoffs. Last Friday the Ironmen won the Distirct 4 Class Double "A" championship with a 28-21 win over Mount Carmel. This Saturday at noon at Hershey Park Stadium Danville will play unbeaten Wyomissing in a state quarterfinal. You can hear that game on the whlm stations beginning with the pregame show at 11:30.
The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team extended their record to 3-0 after their victory against Wilmington at Nelson Field House on Monday night. The final was BU 96 - 55. You can hear the details from the night's action with Larry White in the WHLM Husky Post Game Report:
