Run for the Diamonds
Blue skies... and temperatures in the 40's made for perfect conditions for the estimated 1,700 participants in the 103rd Annual Run for the Diamonds on Thanksgiving Day in Berwick. Eventual winner Derek Nakluski of Kitchener, Ontario Canada and defending race winner C – Fred Joslyn played a game of cat and mouse on the 9 mile course. Rookie Kara Millhouse of State College finished first in the women's division defeating the 2012 defending race winner.
Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble
A return of a tradition for the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble. Back on stage at the Alvina Krause Theater is Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol....” directed by BTE's Richard Cannaday. The first performance of “A Christmas Carol” is Friday night at 7:30... following WHLM's 3rd annual Parade of lights.... and runs every weekend through December 29th. Admission for Friday night's performance is only $5.00... the same as it was in 1978.
One of two reactors at PPL's Susquehanna Steam Electric Station.... north of Berwick in Luzerne County... remains shut down. If you recall... it was a week ago Unit 2 was brought back on line following some scheduled maintenance work.... when it was shutdown automatically by computers. Operators finding hydraulic fluid leaking into a system that controls the flow of steam into the unit's turbine. It's been down ever since... with maintenance people repairing the problem. No word when Unit two at the PPL plan in Salem Township will be back on line.
Shickshinny Meth Arrest
A 32 – year old Shickshinny man is in the Luzerne County Prison... after police busted a suspected Meth lab. Dante Diagostino was arrested after police spent most of Thanksgiving day at a home on North Susquehanna Avenue. There... cops found evidence... obtained a search warrant and eventually arrested Diagostino.
Berwick Meth Lab
He's know to every law enforcement agency in Columbia County. Police in Berwick arresting Tyler Bitler at the start of the Thanksgiving holiday... charging him with making Meth in the family's home at 1540 Fairview Avenue. Cops say family members made the call to authorities... eventually seizing materials used to make meth. Bitler was arraigned... and hustled off to the Columbia County Prison in Bloomsburg... and is being held on $50,000 straight bail.
If you're in Berwick this morning.... you'll have an opportunity to catch the Annual Santa Parade. The event forms at 9:30 in the lot next to Crispin Field. It steps off at 10:30. The route of march consists of starting on Mulberry Street.... to Front.... then making a left on Market Street. Parade vehicles, floats and marchers then continue back to the football field.
High School Football
Two area high school football teams tried to advance in the post season playoffs Friday night. Danville beat Mount Carmel 28-21 in the District 4 AA championship game. Southern Columbia ended their unbeaten season Friday night as they fell to Dunmore 35-29 in a Class A first round state playoff game. In the NFL yesterday... the Houston Texans beat the Detroit Lions 37-34 in overtime. The Washington Redskins defeated the Dallas Cowboys 38 to 31... and the New England Patriots crushed the New York Jets 49 – 19.
