PPL Power Plant

Some problems Tuesday morning at the PPL Susquehanna power plant north of Berwick in Salem Township. Only hours after placing Unit 2 at the PPL Susquehanna power plant back online...operators took the unit off the power grid... shutting it down overnight. The reason... the discovery of a hydraulic oil leak on a system that controls the flow of steam into the turbine. A utility company spokesman said that early Tuesday morning... operators manually shut down the reactor... and plant systems are responding as designed. Susquehanna employees are investigating the cause of the oil leak. Unit 2 was initially placed back on line last night... following inspection and replacement of cracked turbine blades.

 

Mocanaqua Fire

There has been another suspicious fire in Mocanaqua. This time it happened Monday afternoon when flames were discovered in a flood – damaged three unit apartment on Railroad Street. Firemen had the blaze knocked down in minutes. Monday's fire is the the fifth suspicious blaze in the Mocanaqua – Shickshinny area in the past month.

 

Thanksgiving Travel

Many of us are hitting the road this weekend.... if not going to grandma's house... at least we're taking a mini vacation. Jenny Robinson of the Triple - A says most people will travel by car... other by air... and even some by train. Wednesday is expected to be the busiest travel day. Overall... Robinson says an estimated 44 – million people will be on the road this holiday weekend.

 

Agri-businessmen Meet

National challenges were on the minds of state farmers who gathered for the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau's 52nd annual meeting in Hershey. Farm Bureau President... Carl Shaffer of Mifflinville... says the looming “fiscal cliff” could impact farmers, as well, by increasing the federal estate tax from 35 to 55%.... and reducing the exemption for land from $5 – million to $1 – million. Shaffer knows what he's talking about... since he operates one of the larger farms in Columbia County near Mifflinville.

 

Robberies

Two convenience store gas stations in the Hazleton area were the targets of stick up artists early Monday morning. Police say the first robbery took place at the Turkey Hill on Route 93 and the Airport Beltway... the second taking place at the Sunoco on Route 93 and Kiwanis Boulevard... near the Turkey Hill. But despite their proximity... police say the two are not related. Anyone with information on the stickups should call State Police at Hazleton.

 

Coal Company Layoff

A major coal operator is temporarily laying off workers at a number of mines in the area. Blaschak Coal Corporation says workers will be laid off at Lattimer, near Hazleton... Primrose near Mahanoy City... as well as Centraila. The layoff are due to slower than usual coal sales... and an increase in inventory and the amount of coal mined.

 

Person of Interest Found Dead

A man... considered a person of interest in his mother's death... was found dead in his car in a parking lot in Milton Monday. 55 – year old Mark Boyles was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say Boyles was found inside a car... resting against guardrails of a business in the 700 - block of Hepburn Street. No cause of death was given... but there will be an autopsy. Boyles was considered... at one time... a person of interest in his mother's death at the home they shared in Milton.

 

Guilty Plea

A 34 – year old Shamokin man... has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 13 – year old Coal Township girl last February. Shaine Wyland of Bear Valley Avenue entered his plea before Northumberland County President Judge Robert Sacavage... who reduced his bail from $200,000 to $20,000. Judge Sacavage said that Wyland is not considered a flight risk and is expected to appear for sentencing in January.

 

Holiday Express

It's shaping up to be a pretty eventful weekend in Bloomsburg... starting with the WHLM Parade of Lights Friday evening. There will be a series of train rides on the North Pole Express from Bloomsburg towards Danville on the North Shore Railroad.... starting Saturday morning... with Santa Claus as a special guest. Tim Wagner of Downtown Bloomsburg, Incorporated says Santa will be in town to usher in the holiday season with the WHLM Parade of lights... starting at 6 O'clock Friday night. Tickets for the North Pole Express can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce office on Market Street... or on the web at www.ticketderby.com.

BU Women's Basketball

The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team played at Villanova last night in an exhibition game. WHLM's Larry White is reporting Villanova downed BU 78 to 38. Meantime, the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team plays Chestnut Hill College Tuesday night at Nelson Field House starting at 7 O'clock. You can hear that game on the WHLM Stations beginning with The Husky Warmup Show at 6:40.

 

HS Football

Two of the winningest high school football coaches in state history face each other for the first time Friday night when Southern Columbia plays Dunmore in a Class A first round state playoff game. Dunmore coach Jack Henzes is second in state history with 368 career wins. Southern Columbia coach Jim Roth is fifth with 342 victories. Friday's game at Valley View High School begins at 7 O'clock. Our coverage on Classic Rock 103.5 begins with the pregame show at 6:30.
