YMCA / Central Donation

A pretty healthy donation for the Bloomsburg YMCA.... a $25,000 boost from the Alexander car dealership group. Blaise Alexander... who got his start in the car business near Elysburg... says it all comes down to the health and wellness of people. Executive Director Roger Brown says the donation is earmarked for remodeling the room used for the Zuma program... and a couple of other items as well. The Alexander Family Group also donated $10,000 to the Central Columbia School District for it's new health and wellness center on Old Berwick Road. Superintendent Harry Mathias says the money will be put into a new six lane, all – weather track... artificial turf for the football field and lights for a heavily used baseball stadium.

 

Berwick Man

A 24 – year old Berwick man remains lodged at the Northumberland County Jail after he faced a preliminary hearing this week. Justin Cressinger of W. Front Street in Berwick was pulled over last week by a Ralpho Township police officer. But when cops went to place the cuffs on him... Cressinger escaped... leading to a massive manhunt across Elysburg. He was captured a couple of hours later at the home of 19 – year old Brittney Anecki. She's facing a long list of charges... including concealing a fugitive.

 

Pallet Company

An unknown... U.S. - based pallet rental service company will soon set up in the Humboldt Industrial Park... near Hazleton. The move will create 40 new jobs... in nearly 99,000 square feet of space. Word of the company comes from Mericle Commercial Real Estate. The company provides pallet services to grocery... warehouse... club and discount retails in the US, Canada and Mexico.

 

Husband of TV Anchor Arrested

The husband of a Channel 16 anchor has been arrested by police... charged with the alleged sexual abuse of a minor. 52 – year old Mark Kandel of Peckville... in Lackawanna County... is the husband of Channel 16 anchor Marisa Burke... originally from Riverside. Kandel is charged with criminal solicitation... and sexting a 17 – year old boy. During a perp walk in Scranton on Wednesday... he remained silent and didn't talk with reporters. If you recall... back in 2008 Kandel pleaded guilty to giving alcohol to minors.

 

Graham Spanier

Former Penn State president Graham Spanier was arraigned and released on bail at a brief court appearance near Harrisburg Wednesday. He's charged with lying about and concealing child sex abuse allegations involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. Spanier signed paperwork after his bail was set at $125,000, but he was not required to post any of that amount. He was ordered to forfeit his passport and be fingerprinted. He didn't enter a plea. No word when his trial will take place.

 

Steam Electric Station

Unit 1 at PPL's Susquehanna nuclear power plant... north of Berwick in Luzerne County is back on line Thursday morning. That.. after completing a turbine blade inspection. The inspection found signs of cracking on a small number of turbine blades... confirming data from diagnostic equipment install earlier this year. The bad blades were replaced. Meantime... Unit 2 will be shut down in the near future for a similar inspection.

 

Mt. Carmel Fire

Fire investigators are trying to figure out what started a blaze Wednesday morning in some row homes in the 200 block of Second street in Mt. Carmel. The fire tossed three families out into the street. The fire ripped through a double home at 244 and 246 East Second Street... as well as at 252 East Second. A third home at 248 East second sustained smoke damage. Mt. Carmel firemen got help from crews from as far away as Frackville and Sunbury.... and as well as Catawissa to help bring the four alarm fire under control.

 

Election Night

Taking a backward glance following Tuesday's general election. For many... it was one of the smoothest run elections in memory. And Columbia County Chief Registrar Matt Repasky says election day went as planned. But the only hitch came from a person identifying himself as a lawyer... questioning the low voter turnout in Centralia. There are only nine registered voters in Centralia ... with only six casting a ballot. Many moving out of the boro over the last generation due to a continuing mine fire.

 

Skateboard Park

A dedicated group of skateboard enthusiasts are doing their part in constructing a park adjacent to the Bloomsburg town pool. Travis Creveling is one of those individuals. He appeared on the Wednesday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... saying the new skateboard park will be constructed of concrete. Meantime... the group is planning a fundraiser on Sunday at the Moose Exchange on Main Street in Bloomsburg. They'll be showing a yet to be released documentary featuring one of the first major skateboard teams in the nation.

 

Alleged Embezzlement

A 51 – year old woman has been arrested by Nanticoke police after they filed theft charges against a former Luzerne County Community College official. Janet Griffith of Newport Township faces a minimum of three county of theft for allegedly embezzling $16,000. At one time Griffith was the secretary of the college's Public Safety Training Institute. She was arraigned and is free on her own recognizance.

 

Mt. Top Fire

A Fairveiw Township woman... has died of burns received in a fire at her Glen Summit home earlier this week. 44 – year old Tracey Zero died at the Lehigh Valley Hospital burn unit. Her husband... Chris Zero remains in critical condition... after they were found in the bedroom of their home. Authorities are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.

 

Bridge Work

It may be slow going Wednesday in the westbound lane of Interstate 80... between the Mifflinville and Berwick interchanges. A PennDOT spokesman says the right lane will be closed on the new bridge crossing the Susquehanna River as work is preformed to remove the wall on the old westbound bridge.  The two bridges are close together and the contractor wants to make sure a shield is in place to prevent flying pieces of concrete from hitting cars. It's the last scheduled day of the project... and it should be wrapped by late this afternoon.

BU Football

Needing a win to clinch an NCAA playoff berth, the Bloomsburg University football team plays at Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon in the Huskies regular season finale. The Rock is led by quarterback Nigel Barksdale. It's a player Huskies' coach Danny Hale will keep an eye on. Bloomsburg at Slippery Rock kicks off Saturday at 1 0'clock. Our coverage on the whlm stations begins at 12:30 with The Husky Countdown Show.

 

BU Basketball

The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams open the regular season at home this weekend. Friday afternoon at 4, the women's team plays Chestnut Hill. You can hear that game on the WHLM Stations beginning with the pregame show at 3:40. The men's team plays Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
