TV Anchor's Husband Arrested
The husband of a Channel 16 anchor has been arrested by police... charged with the alleged sexual abuse of a minor. 52 – year old Mark Kandel of Peckville... in Lackawanna County... is the husband of Channel 16 anchor Marisa Burke. Kandel is charged with criminal solicitation... and communication with a minor. During a perp walk in Scranton on Wednesday... he remained silent. If you recall... back in 2008 Kandel pleaded guilty to giving alcohol to minors.
Mt. Carmel Fire
Fire investigators are trying to figure out what started a blaze Wednesday morning in some row homes in the 2 – hundred block of Second Street in Mt. Carmel. The fire ripped through a double home at 244 and 246 East Second Street... as well as at 252 East Second. A third home at 248 East second sustained smoke damage. Mt. Carmel firemen got help from crews from as far away as Frackville and Sunbury.... as well as southern Columbia County... including Catawissa... to help bring the four alarm fire under control.
It may be slow going Thursday in the westbound lane of Interstate 80... between the Mifflinville and Berwick interchanges. A PennDOT spokesman says the right lane will be closed on the new bridge crossing the Susquehanna River as work is preformed to remove the wall on the old westbound bridge.
The two bridges are close together and the contractor wants to make sure a shield is in place to prevent flying pieces of concrete from hitting cars. It's the last scheduled day of the project... and it should be wrapped by late this afternoon.
He gave it a good shot... but Bloomsburg Mayor Dan Knorr came up a bit short in his bid to unseat incumbent Republican David Millard in the 109th house district... representing most of Columbia County. With Tuesday's huge voter turnout... Knorr was able to muster about 45% of the vote... compared to Millard's 54%. Whatever the case... Millard said he didn't take the Knorr candidacy lightly. Voter turnout was a big factor in Tuesday's election. Data supplied by Columbia County Clerk Gail Kipp shows nearly 62% of registered voters in the county cast a ballot at 42 precincts.
Masser / Yeager
Republican State Representative Kurt Masser was re-elected to a second two-year term to represent the 107th District. Complete, but unofficial results show Masser with nearly 12,000 votes compared to the 8,900 received by democratic challenger Ted Yeager. The 107th district includes all of Montour County and parts of Northumberland and Columbia counties.
Incumbent Republican Tarah Toohil defeated long – time Butler Township supervisor Ransom Young in her re-election bid for the 116th Legislative District which includes the Hazleton area. Toohil defeated Young by a two to one margin. Her priorities... attempting to attract jobs to her district.
11th district congressman Lou Barletta won reelection to a second term in office. With complete, but unofficial returns... Barletta led Democratic challenger Gene Stilp 58% to 41%. Barletta outperformed Stilp in all nine counties in the reconfigured district which stretches from Luzerne.... south along the west side of the Susquehanna River.. through Columbia.... to the Maryland state line.
With Hurricane Sandy a distant memory these days.... the damage left behind does linger... especially for the American Red Cross up and down the east coast. Sue Norton of the Bloomsburg Chapter says the storm disrupted more than 300 blood drives... but left the organization an estimated 12,000 units short of blood. Saluting our veterans.... for Veterans Day. That's the cause for a parade Saturday morning in Bloomsburg. Kate Levan is coordinating the event. She says the parade forms at 9 O'clock in the parking lot of Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital... and steps off an hour later. The route of march has the parade coming out of the parking lot... down Lightstreet Road... onto Main Street... taking a left at Market... ending at the Bloomsburg Fire Department. In past years... hundreds of people have lined Main and Market Streets in Bloomsburg as they honor the veterans who served in the nation's armed forces.
Wilkes - Barre Superintendent
The City of Wilkes – Barre has a new school superintendent. Bernard Prevuznak replaces Jeff Namey. The vote for the hiring was 5 to 4. Prevuznak is a long time art teacher.... and served as a deputy under former superintendent Namey.
A Schuylkill County business is calling it quits after more than 1 hundred years. Fessler U-S-A... a clothing manufacturer near Orwigsburg has closed it's doors for good. Many of the 130 employees are now out of a job. The owners of the plant blame the national economy for it's downfall. Fessler U-S-A has been around since 1899.
Investigators in Northumberland County are calling the death of an 80 – year old woman “suspicious.” Now... they're looking for the woman's 55 – year old son. They say Vennie Boyles died inside her Park Lane home in Milton over the weekend. Not seen since... is her son... Mark Boyles. Investigators are calling him a “person of interest” in the case.
Berwick / Dallas
When the Berwick High School football team plays Dallas Saturday at Crispin Field in a District 2 AAA semifinal, it will be a rematch of a game Berwick won 50-14 on September 14th. Dallas has won seven straight games since that defeat. Mountaineers' coach Bob Zaruta says he believes the team can win the rematch. The Dallas at Berwick game kicks off Saturday at 1 O'clock. Coverage on Class Rock 103.5 begins at noon with The Coach Curry Show. Saturday's other semifinal is Valley View at Abington Heights.
Bloomsburg / South Williamsport
Bloomsburg lost its season opener at South Williamsport. Friday night... the Panthers will try to avenge that loss when they play at South Williamsport in a District 4 Class A semfinal. In high school soccer Tuesday... In a girls Class AA first round state playoff game... Trinity tops Berwick 2 to nothing. Trinity now moves on to Saturday's quarterfinal where they'll meet Moon. In a boys Class A first round state playoff game Greenwood defeated Benton 1 to 0.
