It's election day across Columbia and Montour counties... as well as across the state and nation. The polls open at 7 O'clock. The big interest in this year's voting... is the run for President... with President Obama and Mitt Romney either showing up or sending representatives to northeastern PA. In Columbia County... Chief Registrar Matt Rapasky says registration numbers between Democrats and Republicans are evenly divide at an estimated 17,000 thousand apiece.... while voters registered as independent or third party checking in with an estimated 5,900. The polls remain open until 8 O'clock tonight.
Bloomsburg Apartment Fire
An apartment fire on Bloomsburg's Main Street early Tuesday morning. The fire department responding to a second story apartment at 134 West Main Street around midnight when smoke alarms sounded and someone spotted smoke coming from the building. Deputy Bloomsburg Fire Chief Scott McBride said he started waking up volunteer when he called for a second alarm. That brought Espy and Montour Township firemen to the scene... as well as a truck from the Berwick Fire Department. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
An estimated 1,000 students will be at Milton High School tomorrow (Wednesday) for the annual Central PA Career Fair. This year's fair is organized by the Milton School District and the Central PA Chamber of Commerce Business and Education Association.... so says the Chamber's Jeff Shaffer. Shaffer says an estimated 50 post – secondary schools, businesses and organizations will be on hand to share local career options.
The 200th anniversary of Columbia County will soon be upon us. As a matter of fact... the weekend of March 22nd and 23rd of next year... are the two days set aside to honor the County's 200th birthday. Appearing on a recent edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... Bicentennial chairman Dave Kovach says there's a huge parade on tap for Saturday, March 23rd. It begins at the Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital parking lot... then steps off... down Lightstreet Road.... the full length of Main Street ending at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds. There will be fun and food in the afternoon... with fireworks at dusk.
If you live in Hazleton... and you own property... you could be in for a pretty hefty tax increase. Mayor Joseph Yannuzzi has presented city council with his budget.... and it includes a proposed 60% tax increase... due to offset revenue losses... and to put more dollars into police spending. Under Yannuzzi's proposal... a person who owns a home valued at $93,000... would pay an estimated $139 – extra a year... on top of the $289 – they paid in 2012. Members of council will take a look at the Mayor's proposed budget... making cuts to allow more affordable living for Hazleton area residents.
Investigators in Northumberland County are calling the death of an 80 – year old woman “suspicious.” Now... they're looking for the woman's 55 – year old son. They say Vennie Boyles died inside her Park Lane home in Milton over the weekend. Not seen since... is her son... Mark Boyles. Investigators are calling him a “person of interest” in the case.
Gas prices are falling noticeably all across northeastern Pennsylvania. The latest Triple – A Fuel Gauge report shows that self – service, unleaded regular is averaging $3.57 a gallon. That's down a penny from the weekend... off three cents from last Monday... and down 36 – cents from a month ago. The reason.... lower crude oil prices, a big price drop in pump prices in California and Hurricane Sandy.
Berwick Fire Folo
Still no word as to what caused that fire in a vacant house in the 300 block of Vine Street in Berwick Sunday evening. A state police fire marshal spent Monday going through the rubble at 347 Pine. As of now... that Sunday night fire in Berwick is labeled “suspicious."
For the second week in a row, a Bloomsburg University linebacker is the PSAC Eastern Division defensive player of the week. Last week it was senior Jarett Pidgeon. This week it's sophomore Justin Shirk who had a career high 14 tackles and a forced fumble in Saturday's 24-23 win over West Chester. The Huskies remain in 4th place in the Super Region One rankings. They can clinch an NCAA playoff spot and a likely first round home game if they can win at Slippery Rock on Saturday in the regular season finale.
In Monday night football...the Philadelphia Eagles fell to the New Orleans Saints 28 – 13.
In the NBA last night...The New York Knicks defeated the Philadelphia 76er's 110 – 88.
