PPL Storm Update
PPL crews have spent the day... in 40 – degree weather... trying to restore power to an estimated 1,000 customers still without power and in the dark. The utility's website says despite the outages, an estimated 2,292 subscribers have been restored. In neighboring Montour County 225 homes and businesses remain in the dark... with 218 customers having power restored since the storm began. Overall, 256,354 customers are out of power in the 29 county area serviced by the giant utility. Meantime, PPL has made arrangements with a number of stores in Columbia and Montour... and other counties to provide free ice and water to customers without electricity. Most Weis Markets... as well as Boyer's Markets in Berwick and Ashland are participating in the program. Also included are Sheetz convenience stores and Red Rock Corners on State Route 118 near Benton.
Despite having the past two days off due to Storm Sandy... it's back to business Wednesday for students and teachers at the Berwick Area School District. However, no one will be able to use the swimming pool for at least a week at the Berwick Middle School. That.... after part of the roof got caught with a gust of wind from the storm... so says Superintendent Wayne Brookhart. Superintendent Brookhart said he expects the damaged to be covered by the school's insurance policy... and hopes to have the roof repaired in the next week to ten days.
The Hazleton Area Ninth Grade Center is having problems after the passing of Hurricane Sandy this week. Winds peeled a section of the roof off the building... exposing a dozen classrooms to rain water. That damaged ceilings... insulation... dry wall and wiring.
Governor Corbett will be on the road Wednesday. The governor plans to travel to the hardest hit area of the state... devastated by storm Sandy earlier in the week. Mr. Corbett says he want to get a first hand look at the damage caused in the Philadelphia area... as well as some of the surrounding counties.
After spending the last week at the state's Camp Hill diagnostic and classification center... Jerry Sandusky was transtered to the State Correctional Institution at Green... near Waynesburg. That's where the former assistant Penn State Football coach will serve his 30 to 60 sentence for his conviction of sexually abusing young boys. A spokesman for the state prison system says Sandusky will be in protective custody to assure his safety.
Hazleton Firefighters had two fires to deal with at the height of Storm Sandy. Firemen were called to the 400 – block of Samuels Avenue late Monday night... where they found an electrical line on the ground... causing a yard and a porch to catch fire. About the same time... firemen responded to 510 Samuels when a garage caught fire. A surge of electricity is being blamed for overheating an electrical box... catching combustible material on fire.
A state police fire marshal will be called in to see what started a blaze in a vacant home in the 300 – hundred block of Vine Street in Berwick. Flames were spotted coming from the building at the height of Monday night's storm. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition that neighbors saw three people running from the structure moments before it was spotted. Neighbors also say the home had been vacant for the past eight years.
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board said the 600 Wine and Spirit stores they operate should be up and running Wednesday. They were shut down at the start of the week as Sandy approached the state. Tuesday was spent assessing damage from the storm.
Bloomsburg and Central Columbia will renew their neighborhood high school football rivalry Friday night at Panther Stadium. Both teams will bring 7-2 records into the game. Preparing for the regular season, the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team plays two exhibition games against Division I opponents. On Thursday night... the Huskies play at Towson, and Sunday afternoon they play at Syracuse. You can hear both of those games on the WHLM Stations.
On the opening night of the NBA season last night... it was the Miami Heat defeating the Boston Celtics 120 to 107.
