Beaver Township Fire

A fire destroyed a mobile home in the 100 block of Scotch Valley Drive in Beaver Township Wednesday morning. Incident commander Ralph DeFrain of the Main Township Fire Company said the blaze had a pretty good start. Bill Geist has rented the home for the past 21 years... and he wasn't there when the fire broke out. A state police fire marshal is expected to be on the scene... trying to figure out what started this morning's fire in Beaver Township.

 

Meth Lab Bust

A woman remains in the Columbia County Prison after she was arrested last night on a variety of drug charges in Montour Township. Police Chief Terry Eckert said Christina Morgan was discovered actively cooking meth adjacent to a pond on Dussen Drive late last night. She was arrested... and faces misdemeanor and felony charges. Morgan had a video arraignment Wednesday morning... with judge Richard Knecht with an unspecified bond set.

 

Berwick Robbery

Police in Berwick are investigating the armed robbery of an insurance agency which went down around 10:30 Wednesday morning. There are reports that say two men... wearing hoodies... strolled into the Kocher Insurance Agency at 120 E. 3rd Street and held up the place. One of the men was carrying a handgun. Both fleeing on foot... then making their get away on bicycles. No one was hurt... and at last report... Berwick police were combing the streets attempting to find the pair.

 

Cleveland Township Fire

A state police fire marshal is expected to be called in to determine what started a blaze that destroyed a Cleveland Township homestead Tuesday afternoon. Right now... it appears the blaze which destroyed the farm house of Gary Welkom on Roosevelt Road started in an enclosed kitchen. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition... the fire was spotted by a neighbor who called for help. The home was vacant... and was undergoing remodeling.

 

Absentee Ballots

If you're not going to be in town election day... time is running out to apply for an absentee ballot. That word from Columbia County Chief Voter Registrar Matt Repasky. He says you can either call or stop in at his office in the Courthouse Annex... and even apply online by October 30th. Repasky says the voter must have the absentee ballot back in his office by the close of business November 2nd to be counted in the November 6th general election.

 

Debate No - Show

What happens if you have a debate for the two congressional candidates in the 11th district... and only one candidate shows up. That was the case Tuesday night in Danville when Congressman Lou Barletta was a “no show” for a debate with Democratic opponent Gene Stilp. The Press – Enterprise reporting in Wednesday's edition... Barletta having a speaking engagement in another part of the sprawling district... leaving his chief spokesman Shawn Kelley to take on Stilp about the issues of the day.

 

Chamber Showcase

Support local businesses. That's the theme of Wednesday's 2012 Showcase Business Expo being held near Berwick... presented by the Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce. Chamber president Fred Gaffney says the organization's primary mission is to promote and support members. The Showcase Business Expo begins at 2 O'clock... and runs through the early evening at the Rolling Pines Golf Course south of Berwick.

 

Vial of Life

For those over sixty... having a list of current medications is important... especially if you have a medical crisis. Now... there's a program being promoted by the Geisinger Medical Center called “Vial of Life.” It's been around for some time... but it's just starting to get traction in the Susquehanna Valley. GHS Pharmacist Angela Cindric says the vial will store you medication list so it can be grabbed quickly by first responders. Ms. Cindric and other pharmacists presented a program Tuesday at the Bloomsburg YMCA introducing folks to the concept during the celebration of national pharmacists week.

 

Hazleton Water

The Hazleton City Authority... the folks who provide water to 15,000 subscribers in the city... a businesses in Luzerne, Carbon and Schuylkill Counties has received a $6.5 - million grant from the state agency known as Pennvest. The money to be used to improving water service... such as water flow to fire hydrants on the city's northeast side. No word yet when the city will get the money... or how soon the improvements will get underway.

 

Accident

A Freeland woman is recovering from injuries sustained earlier this week... where her car slammed into the rear of a parked tractor – trailer. Investigators don't know why 23 – year old Samantha Gonzalez ran her car into the rear of the parked 18 – wheeler along State Route 940 in Hazle Township. Gonzalez was flown to a regional trauma center for treatment of head injuries.

 

Ray Musto

Former State Senator Raphael Musto may never see the inside of a courtroom. Citing the opinion of medical experts... Musto's attorney has asked a federal judge to dismiss the corruption charges against him... or place his trial on hold. The 84 – year old Wyoming Valley Democrat's llegal troubles began back in late 2010 when he was initially charged with fraud and bribery. His trial has been postponed in the past.... citing non – alcohol – related liver cirrhosis.

 

Jerry Sandusky Moved

Jerry Sandusky is now in the state prison system. He was taken from the Centre County Jail to the state correctional institute at Camp Hill on Monday. It will take another week before the former Penn State Assistant football coach is evaluated and sent to a prison where he'll serve his 30 to 60 year term for his conviction of molesting ten young boys over a fifteen year period of time. No word on where Sandusky will end up.. but there is a belief he may become an inmate at the state's Laurel Highland's prison... one designed for the elderly male inmate population... and close to his State College home.

 

Northumberland Commission

The Northumberland County Commission has brought the hammer down on the use of the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area. The commission voting two to nothing on Tuesday to ban people from entering the 65 – hundred acres of county owned land. Commissioners saying it all comes down to the possibility of a lawsuit. However under the ban.... hunting is permitted... but all other uses are banned... such as using off – road vehicles and ATV's.

 

WHLM Sports

Danville HS

The defensive unit for the Danville High School football team has helped the Ironmen to a 7-1 record this season. This Friday at Bloomsburg, that defense will be challenged by the passing attack led by Panther quarterback Ricky Klingerman. Danville coach Jim Keiser telling our Jim Doyle he has a lot of respect for Klingerman. Danville at Bloomsburg is our High School Football game of the week. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins at 6 with The Friday Football Commute.

 

HS Golf

It was the final day of the Class AA state high school golf championships at Heritage Hills in York on Tuesday. Robbie Seebold of Danville finished 11th in the state. His Danville teammate, Austin Renz, finished tied for 17th. Central Columbia's Derek Duttrey finished 20th, and his Central Columbia teammate, C.J. Hollister finished 30th in the state.

 

BU Field Hockey

In women's field hockey Tuesday Bloomsburg University lost to Millersville 2-0 in the PSAC quarterfinals. Bloomsburg now awaits the NCAA Selection Show next Monday to see if it rates in the top 3 in the South Region to make the NCAA Playoffs.

 

MLB

In major League baseball... it's game one of the World Series Wednesday night. The Detroit Tigers play the Giants in San Francisco.
