Cars Burglarized

Bloomsburg Police are out with a warning headed into the weekend.... lock your cars.

Police Chief Leo Sokoloski telling us that a dozen vehicles in the area of 5th... West 9th and Railroad Street were entered late night Wednesday through early Friday morning.

The Chief didn't say what, or if anything was taken.... but in the past burglars have gone through cars looking for loose change... cell phones.... and GPS units.

Garrison School

The former Garrison Memorial Elementary School in Shickshinny goes on the auction block Saturday morning. The Northwest Area School district is selling the 22,000 square foot building on Vine Street now that the building is no longer needed. The district hopes to raise a minimum of $5,000 from the sale.


Games of Chance

Legislation to further update the rules and regulations governing small games of chance in PA was okayed this week by the General Assembly. Republican State Representative Doyle Heffley of near-by Carbon County says he supported the changes. Representative Heffley says he hopes to continue to work on the issue during the next session. The measure is now on Governor Corbett's desk awaiting his signature.


Chamber Showcase

The Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce is putting the finishing touches on next week's Showcase Business Expo. The showcase is scheduled for Wednesday... so says the Chamber's Fred Gaffney... and gives the ability for members to connect with the public. The 2012 Showcase Business Expo will be held at the Rolling Pines Golf Course... south of Berwick... starting at 2 O'clock.


Farm Vehicles

Three bills will update the state's vehicle code in ways that will help farmers... not only in Columbia and Montour Counties... but across the state. The measures increase the width allowances to accommodate wider, modern equipment.. and increase the distance farm equipments and trucks can travel. Mark O'Neill of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau says they hope the governor signs the bill soon.


Traffic Signals

We'll all have to deal with a new set of traffic signals within the not too distant future. The newly installed signals at the intersection of Route 42 and Perry Avenue... in Hemlock Township... will be turned on into a “flashing” mode next Tuesday. They will remain that way until the following week.... when they become fully operational.


Sandusky Appeal

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky appealed his child sex abuse convictions on Thursday. His lawyers arguing they lacked time to prepare for the high-profile case. Sandusky's attorneys also asked that the convictions be tossed out or a new trial be held because prosecutors lacked evidence to convict him and statutes of limitations had run out. The 68 – year old was convicted in June on 45 counts of sexually abusing 10 boys. He is now serving a 30 – to 60 year prison term.


Crash Injures Two

Two Hazleton area teens are in the hospital this morning after the car they were riding in... crashed in Butler Township Thursday afternoon. 18 – year old Carl Wiseman the third... and a 16 – year old female passenger.. were critically injured when their car rolled over several times on St. John's Road.  The pair were rushed to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center by two life – flight helicopters.


Bound for Court

Two men are being bound over for court... after they were accused of beating a man to death over an iPhone back in August. 17 – year old Mitchell Dedes and 19-year old Breon Judon are charged in the beating death of 29 – year old Aaron Reznick of Hazle Township... found in the middle of Carson Street. The pair allegedly forced Reznick to strip at gunpoint... put him in the trunk of his car... and stomped on him until he died. No word when Dedes and Judon will go on trial.


Tamaqua Fire

A State Police fire marshal has been called in to determine what started an early Thursday morning fire at a popular Tamaqua bar. The fire broke out in the apartment above the Clamtown Tavern along route 443 in West Penn Township. That's where the business owner and his family live. The American Red Cross is helping out the family.


Hazleton City

Hazleton city council is not any closer to naming a new city administrator. Council... this week... failed to approve the appointment of Steve Hahn of Sugarloaf Township. Instead... they tabled the motion for his hiring. Some council member were concerned about the selection process... the lack of information about his salary and responsibilities... and the fact Hahn doesn't live in town. Meantime... Hahn says he'll re-assume he responsibilities as transit director.


WHLM Sports


HS Football

Central Columbia and Lewisburg... contenders for both conference and District championships... both brought 6-1 records into our high school game of the week Friday night at Central. The game was delayed in the third quarter due to lighting across much of the area. The game eventually resumed and fiished in a 16-15 Central victory.


Berwick Bulldogs

The Bulldogs of Berwick extended their winning streak to five Friday night with a 23-20 win over Pittston.


Important Games

In other games tonight, Bloomsburg beat Mifflinburg 39-22, Danville's shut out Shikellamy 24-0, and Southern Columbia held off Shamokin at home 45-6. On Saturday Columbia Montour Vo Tech is at Carson Long.

BU Football

In college football Saturday, Bloomsburg University is at Cheyney in a 1 o'clock start. Coverage on the WHLM stations begins at 12:30 with The Husky Countdown Show.



In the NFL last night: San Francisco 49er's downed the Seattle Seahawks 13 to 6.



In major league baseball, the Detroit Tigers completed a sweep of the New York Yankees Thursday with an 8-1 win to wrap up the American League title. Detroit is now headed to the World Series..



In game four of the National League Championship Series.. St. Louis broke out of it's slump... defeating the San Francisco Giants 8 to 3. The Card's now have a three to one lead in the NLCS Series. Game five is Friday night.
