United Way

The people are in place and now the 2012 United Way campaign of Columbia County is hitting full stride. Executive Director John Thomas says the organization has received pledges of just over $181,000... that's about 35% of their $525,000 goal. But last year the United Way raised $543,000 and Thomas says he believes that was due to generous giving following the floods of September 2011. Thomas also says the big factor in getting a slow start this year... was the lack of campaign divisional chairmans not in place during last month's kickoff


Flood Stories, Too

The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble is already getting ready for their production of Flood Stories, Too which will hit the stage next spring. The BTE's Syreeta Cannady says they're sifting through story lines from the flood of 2011... many of which are compelling. Ms. Cannaday says Flood Stories, Too is a community production using BTE... and actors from the Bloomsburg University theater program... and folks off the street. Meantime... open auditions will take place next month at the Alvina Krause Theater on Center Street in Bloomsburg.


Berwick Officer Rsigns

A Berwick Police officer who resigned from the job over the weekend has been charged with furnishing liquor to a person underage. State Police... who conducted the investigation.. says 28 – year old Jimmie Hill of Maple Road... is accused of giving alcohol to Emily Potter who was 19 at the time. The incident took place somewhere between March and April of last year at an apartment near the intersection of Orange Street and Spring Garden Avenue. Potter... now 21... gave information to Berwick police earlier this month... which in turn... launched the state police investigation.


Firefighters Sentenced

Two former volunteer firefighters will spend the next couple of years in state prison for setting fires in Montour County earlier this year. 19 – year old Zane Snyder of Milton ... was sentenced to up to 17 years behind bars... while 35 – year old Charles Jacobs of Lewisburg will spend the next 18 – years in prison. Both were sentenced in Montour County Court in Danville yesterday after admitting to torching a barn and two homes in Liberty Township. Snyder and Jacobs were members of the Potts Grove fire department who responded to the call. Both face similar charges next month in Northumberland County.


Montour Sentence

A Danville man will spend the next 12 to 24 – years in state prison... after pleading guilty of having sexual contact with a child. Brandon Mower was sentenced Monday in Montour County Court.Earlier this year... Mower pleaded guilty of having sex with a six year old girl for a year starting in July of 2007.



Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with representatives of Allentown – based Pennsylvania Power and light Tuesday afternoon. The meeting is being held to discuss the company's progress on improvements in the areas of corrective actions and human performance at the Susquehanna Steam Electric station in Salem Township... in neighboring Luzerne County. The session is open to the public... and begins at 5 O'clock at the Susquehanna Energy Information Center at 634 Salem Boulevard... near the plant. Sometime during the session... folks will have an opportunity to speak.


2013 Budget

Wilkes – Barre Mayor Tom Leighton has unveiled his proposed budget for 2013. It includes a 31% property tax hike. The tax hike would boost a homeowners tax bill an estimated $183. But the mayor said... if unions and city employees make concessions... it would be lower... saving the average property owner a lot of money. The spending plan must be in place at the end of the year.


NEPA Gas Prices

Heading out on the highway this week... You'll find the price of self – serve unleaded regular across northeastern Pennsylvania five cents a gallon cheaper than it was last week at this time. Now... it's down to $3.86 a gallon... instead of $3.91... and off ten cents compared to last month at this time.


West Hazleton Robbery

A West Hazleton man was busted by police after he tried to rob the same west Hazleton store twice in one day. The incident happened Saturday when 22 – year old Gary Kripp allegedly used a knife to rob the Puff 'n' Stuff store on N. 4th Street... getting away with an undisclosed amount of cash. He tried to pull off a second robbery at the same location, but was scared away with a clerk who picked up a baseball bat. Also nabbed with Kripp was his alleged getaway driver... 23 – year old Mitchell Klingerman of Zion Grove.

BU Football

Of the 167 Division II football teams in the country, only three are ranked higher than Bloomsburg University in this week's American Football Coaches Association Poll. The unbeaten Huskies have moved up to 4th in the nation. Three other PSAC teams are in the poll- Shippensburg is 13th, California is 14th, and IUP is ranked 20th. Bloomsburg's next game is Saturday afternoon at Cheyney.


HS Golf

Four area high school golfers will be competing Tuesday at the regional championships at Glen Oaks near Reading. Austin Renz and Robbie Seebold from Danville and Derek Duttry and C.J.Hollister of Central Columbia will try to qualify for the state championships.



In Monday night football... Peyton Manning led the Denver Broncos to a 35 – 24 win over the San Diego Chargers.



In major league baseball, in game two of the National League Championship Series... the San Francisco Giants defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 1. The series is now tied at one game apiece. Game three of the American League Championship series between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers will be played Tuesday night in Detroit. The Tigers lead the series two games to none.
