After raising an estimated $543,000 in 2011... the United Way of Columbia County is steaming towards this year's goal of $525,000. Thus far... a month into the campaign... donors contributing just about $183,000 or roughly 35% of the overall goal... so says the United Way's John Thomas. The big factor... according to Thomas... is getting a slower start this year... and the lack of campaign division chairpersons not in place during last month's kickoff
Flood Stories, Too
The Bloomsburg Theater Ensemble is already getting ready for their production of Flood Stories, Too which will hit the stage next spring. The BTE's Syreeta Cannaday says they're shifting through story lines from the flood of 2011... many of which are compelling. Ms. Cannaday says Flood Stories, Too is a community production using BTE... and actors from the Bloomsburg University theater program... and folks off the street. Open auditions will take place next month and the Alvina Krause Theater on Center Street in Bloomsburg.
Congressman Lou Barletta is trying to get an estimated $15 – million out of the hands of the U.S. Economic Development Administration in order to finance a flood wall around two of Bloomsburg's biggest businesses. Autoneum and Windsor Foods... both on the west side of town... who employ a combed 1,000 people... were hit hard by flood waters in 2011... and Representative Barletta says money is a key to keeping those firms intact. Congressman Barletta is being helped in his request by Senators Pat Toomey and Robert Casey.
It's hard to believe... but we're getting into the holiday season... and the folks at the Berwick Salvation Army will do their best to make sure those families who are having a tough time of it... have something to look forward at Christmas. Lt. Kevin Polito says orders for the holiday were taken last week... now they need help from the greater Berwick area in the area of donations and volunteers. If you want to help... give Lt. Former Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter died over the weekend at his Southeast PA home. He played a key role in many US Supreme Court nominations. But CBS News political reporter Dotty Lynch says he was a republican most of his career... worked to improve the Nation's health care system. Specter lost a Democratic Senate primary bid in 2009... a year after switching parties... saying he became a democrat when the GOP became too conservative.
Crispin Field Vandalism
Berwick police are looking for vandals responsible for trashing Crispin Field and near by businesses late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Vandals hitting a concession trailer owned by the Berwick Youth Football League... as well as the stadium's press box. However, the damage was cleaned up by volunteers. Our media partner NewsWatch 16 is reporting a nearby restaurant was broken into and trashed... and a plate glass window at an auto parts store was damaged.
A State Police fire marshal is due Monday at the scene of a late Sunday night fire at the Castawayz Bar and Grill on Route 93... between Berwick and Orangeville. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition... the blaze began in a crawl space between the bar and apartments at the rear of the building. An attempt was made to extinguish the flames... but they were just too much for owner Mick Kowalski... who then called Columbia County dispatch.
Six people were chased out of their home at the corner of Second and Grant Streets at midday Sunday... after a fire started in a bedroom on the second flood. Investigators believe a faulty appliance started the blaze. The six people living in the home are now being helped by the American Red Cross
A 47 – year old Hazle Township man is charged with having sex with an underage girl. Police say it first began when 47 – year old Lanning Vagts allegedly had sex with a girl who was eight at the time. Court papers say the assaults continued until 2004 when the girl... then in her teens... moved out of the area. Vagts was charged with statutory sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault. He's jailed on $50,000 straight cash.
Hispanic Outreach Center
An agency.... offering outreach to Hispanics in the Hazleton area... now has a new home. The Dominican House will move into a former bank building at 2 East Broad Street. The first floor used to house a restaurant. The group was established to help students with homework... and for Hispanics to help them settle in the Hazleton area... and provide classes for citizenship.
There will be some traffic slow downs over the next few days on Interstate 80. Beginning Monday and lasting through Thursday... the contractor working on the I – 80 bridge over the Susquehanna River will have the right, westbound lane closed... between Mifflinville and Berwick.. in order to remove the parapet on the old westbound bridge. The work will last until 5 PM each day.
Franklyn Quiteh ran for a career best 282 yards and Tim Kelly threw four touchdown passes to help the Bloomsburg University football team remain unbeaten with a 48-27 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. Kelly's last touchdown pass was his longest... going 72 – yards. The Huskies next game is Saturday afternoon at Cheyney.
In the NFL Sunday... the Detroit Lions beat the Philadelphia Eagles 26-23 in overtime... the New York Jets defeated the Indianapolis Colts 35-9 and the New York Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers 26-3
In major league baseball, in game two of the American League Championship Series, the Detroit Tigers took a two games to none lead with a 3-0 win over the Yankees. In game one of the National League championship series... the Saint Louis Cardinals downed the San Francisco Giants 6 to 4.
