Big improvements coming to the Central High School on Old Berwick Road. Funded through private donations.... the school plans a new sports facility.. including a wellness center... a six lane all weather track for running or walking... and the installation of artificial turf on the current grass – covered football field. Superintendent Harry Mathias says it will make the playing surface available year round for students and the community. Also to be included in the overall project are lights for Central's baseball diamond allowing for multi – team use during different time of the day.
An exciting hour or so in downtown Danville on Tuesday... after a contractor sliced through a natural gas line in the basement of a building on Mill Street. Our media partner NewsWatch 16 says that forced the evacuation of an estimated 60 people from the Montour County Courthouse... as well as several near-by apartments. The contractor had thought crews had shut down the line before a worker cut through the line with a saw. Now... UGI Penn Natural Gas may have to dig up part of Mill Street to make permanent repairs.
Consider it a 9-1-1 number for non – emergencies. Now... all across central Pennsylvania... including Columbia and Montour Counties... there is a number you can dial to get your questions answered. John Thomas of the United Way of Columbia County says it's 2-1-1... when you're faced with using a human service agency... and you don't know where to turn. The new 2-1-1 service is now live... with operators on duty 24 / 7 to help folks who need help in the human service field. Thomas says the new service is expected to cut down on non – emergency calls going to 9-1-1 emergency dispatch operators.
The Columbia County Office of the Aging is planning it's annual Apple Harvest Health Festival in Espy. The agency's director Kathy Lynn says it's a great place to get your yearly flu shot... and an opportunity to check out some of the services the agency provides. The annual Apple Harvest Health Festival will take place October 2nd at the Espy Fire Hall.
Buyouts have been completed... and now flood damaged homes in Shickshinny are coming down. Work by Stell Enterprises began this week... and soon 14 homes will be gone. The structures are along Main and Canal Streets... as well as Susquehanna Avenue. The work will last into next week.
A 21 – year old Hazleton man could be spending a lot of time in prison... after pleading guilty this week to receiving and distributing child pornography. Rafel Polonia pleaded guilty in U-S District court this week to downloading... and then sharing the videos. He could get anywhere from 8 to 11 years in prison... with supervised released for the remainder of his life. Sentencing to take place at a future date.
State Police at Hazleton are investigating a crash which involved the Beaver Meadows police Chief. It happened over the weekend on Route 93 while Chief Michael Morresi... who was on duty... tried to pass a car on the left while responding to a call. Instead, the car driven by 18 year old Frederick Bobal turned left... hitting the police cruiser. No one was injured. Police won't say who's at fault.
The former Penn State administrators facing charges for their role in the Jerry Sandusky scandal are asking the court for separate trials. In motions filed this week in Dauphin County Court, attorneys for Gary Schultz and Tim Curley argue that their clients’ trials will be prejudiced by being held together. They are scheduled to stand trial together starting January 7th. In addition to felony perjury charges for testimony they gave to the grand jury investigating Sandusky, Curley and Schultz are facing failure to report child abuse charges. Their attorneys are asking the court to separate those charges as well.

Geisinger Medical Center is teaming up with Bloomsburg University to provide bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in nursing. The program is designed to increase the number of local nurses who have earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Master of Science in Nursing to meet the health care needs of patients. The partnership will allow for an increased enrollment in the University’s existing Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, with courses offered on the GMC campus beginning in the fall 2013.
Wyoming Valley West has beaten Berwick three straight times going into the renewal of their high school football rivalry Friday night in Kingston. Berwick coach George Curry says the game is important. Berwick at Wyoming Valley West kicks off Friday night at 7 O'clock. You can hear the game on Classic Rock 103.5 starting with the Coach Curry Show at 6.
Tuesday night's scheduled game between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets was postponed because of inclement weather. It will be made up Thursday night. Wednesday night... the Phils and Mets meet in game two of their three game set.
