Hit & Run Suspect
An 18 – year old Berwick man is in the Columbia County Prison on a quarter – million dollars bond after he was charged with hitting and killing a bicyclist on Ridge Road over the weekend. Our media partner NewsWatch 16 is reporting Joseph Rish alleged struck 50 – year old Robert Mohr early Sunday morning with a borrowed SUV. Rish telling police he didn't stop because he believed he hit a deer... and he had been drinking and has a suspended drivers license. Mohr was on his way home to Brookside Village after working the third shift at a Lightstreet restaurant when he was hit.
Traffic was backed up for eight miles Monday afternoon following a motorcycle crash on Interstate 80 in Nescopeck Township. Authorities say the unidentified biker died when he lost control and apparently hit a guardrail near Mile Marker 249... between the Conyngham and Mifflinville interchange. The investigation continues... and police say no one else was involved in the accident.
Within the next few years... it's hoped ground will be broken and a memorial erected to all men and women from Columbia County who served in the military. The wraps were taken off plans Sunday for the Veterans Memorial of Columbia County by a project committee. Those plans call for the memorial to be placed in the middle of Market Street in Bloomsburg... at the entrance to town park... inside a traffic circle.
Hit & Run Death
A 50 – year old North Center Township man... riding his bicycle on his way home from working the third shift at a Lightstreet restaurant... was struck and killed by a hit and run driver early Sunday morning. 50 – year old Robert Mohr of Brookside Village was wearing a green safety vest when he was struck from behind on Ridge Road. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition... Mohr was found alongside the road by people driving by. He was rushed to Geisinger in Danville where he died.
Now.. police are looking for the driver of that hit and run vehicle.
A weekend afternoon at the Jackson Mansion in Berwick.... a rally against drugs... one of twenty around the country on Saturday... especially against the use of heroin. The rally was not only a way to eliminate the drug problem... but a rally for the memories of those lost to drug use... and a hope for a new beginning.
I – 80 Work
Work continues on that $50 – million Interstate 80 bridge project over the Susquehanna River. Starting Monday... there will be intermittent lane closures and rolling roadblocks to slow traffic on the east and westbound lanes of I-80 between mile marker 240 and 244 until 7 O'clock Monday night. A PennDOT spokesman says the work is in preparation to switch traffic to the next phase, which is four lanes of traffic on the new and reconstructed bridges on the westbound alignment by the end of the today.
A big part of the repaving project on Front Street in Berwick gets underway Tuesday. PennDOT spokesman Rick Mason says that beginning at 5 AM... Barletta Construction will start the process of bringing Front Street... between Market and Walnut up to spec. Specifically... they begin digging up 18 inches of old pavement... placing a sub – base material in the right lane. Mason says traffic will be restricted to one lane. The reconstruction of Front Street is expected to be done by the 29th.
A year after they were evicted from their Perry Avenue location by the flood of 2011... the Columbia County Traveling Library has finally found a new home. It's in the county - owned building on Sawmill Road. Director Lydia Kegler says there is a big difference between the two locations... with being on the ground floor and aisles wide enough to host folks using walkers or mobility devices. The traveling library had spent seven months at a storefront location in the Columbia Mall until the new space on Sawmill Road was available.
The Hazleton area school district is awaiting word from the state education department dealing with what is called... unusual results... on student assessment tests in 2008 and 2009. The state education department is still trying to determine if the scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests were through legitimate academic gains... cheating... or just an anomaly. The test results from five other districts are also being examined closely.
Remember about a year ago... big plans were unveiled for a prototype wind turbine facility in Hazleton Heights. Since that time... nothing has been done to the property on the south side of City View Park near the BMX Track. But Hazleton Mayor Joseph Yannuzzi... as well as the president of New Jersey – based V3 Power is assuring city council... the project is alive and well... and V3 is in the midst of trying to find financing.
A Hazleton man is one of nearly two dozen suspected drug dealers rounded up at the start of the weekend in a Wilkes – Barre narcotics investigation. Police say 26 – year old Saheed Coleman was charged with delivery of a control substance... as well as a count of possession of a controlled substance. Authorities believe “Operation Square Deal” is a major blow to drug trafficking in Wilkes – Barre.
It was a payback weekend for three area football teams. The Bloomsburg University Huskies avenged a 52-14 loss to Kutztown last season with a 44-37 win over the Golden Bears Saturday afternoon at Redman Stadium. In high school football on Friday night Berwick beat Dallas 50-14 just one season after a 33 point loss to the Mountaineers... and Southern Columbia avenged a close loss to Mount Carmel last season with a 49-33 win over the Red Tornadoes.
In the NFL Sunday... the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Baltimore Ravens 24 to 23... and the New York Giants came from behind to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41 to 34. In other action... the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the New York Jets 27 to 10.
The Houston Astro's rallied Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies. The final 7 to 6... after Justin Maxwell hit a two run double... and Matt Dominguez added a two run single in Houston's four run seventh inning.
