Federal Flood Measure
Congressman Lou Barletta who represents Columbia County... is pushing a disaster loan bill through the house with a lower interest rate than what business people and flood victims could receive elsewhere. The proposal is Barletta's answer to the flood we suffered a year ago this week. During a recent appearance in Bloomsburg... Mr. Barletta says it's only right to have low, low interest rates on borrowing... citing the U-S government giving Pakistan $215 million in interest free loans with no payback required for flooding disasters in that country.
Kovach / Convention
Thousands of delegates are attending this week's Democratic Convention in Charlotte. They're ramping up to re-nominate President Obama for a second term... as well as his running mate... Vice – President Joe Biden. Democratic Columbia County Commissioner David Kovach is watching the activities from a distance... telling WHLM News... we ARE better off than what we were four years ago. Commissioner Kovach went on to say... Mr. Obama hasn't received much help from the Republicans now sitting in congress in order to get their nation back to prosperity.
Six people died and just over 260 were injured in nearly 750 crashes investigated by Pennsylvania State Police over the long Labor Day weekend. PSP Commissioner Frank Noonan said of the total crashes... 88 were alcohol related... including one fatal crash. Meantime, troopers handed out 7,700 speeding citations... arrested for 440 people for driving under the influence.
Man Sought in Murder
Hazleton police say they're looking for someone to come forward in the weekend shooting death of a 34 – year old man. Erick Gwaltney was gunned down early Saturday morning at the corner of West Fourth and Alter Streets. Now... they're looking for a person of interest going by the name of “Richard” or “Ricardo.” Authorities say if you have information on the shooting call Hazleton Police or 911.
Two men and a woman are facing a host of drug charges... after police found them in an abandoned Hazleton church. The trio was found inside the former St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Green Street. They're also facing theft charges... since police believe they stealing copper pipes from the church.
Hundreds of police officers paid final respects to a Pennsylvania State trooper killed in an off – duty motorcycle accident west of Bloomsburg a week ago. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Ashley for 27 – year old Royce Engler of Dorrance Township. He died last week when he lost control of his motorcycle on the Route 42 on – ramp which leads to Rupert in Montour Township.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection have been cited for burning a barn on Hilkert Road... in Montour County.... last month. Contractor Marvin Yoder of Milton and Doug Divan... who was considering purchasing the property... were cited for not notifying the DEP of the demolition... failure to check for asbestos and burning waste for disposal. Still to be determined... if the two men face fines for their actions.
When Pottsville takes on Berwick Friday night at Crispin Field, it will be the first meeting of the two schools since the 2004 playoffs. Both teams won their season openers last Friday.
