Berwick Meth Lab
A suspected meth lab in Berwick... busted Wednesday... with ten people arrested... including three juveniles... the youngest 14. Our media partner... NewsWatch 16 is reporting... it all went down when police and a SWAT team raided a home in the 400 block of West Front Street. Berwick Police Chief Ken Strish said all were caught red – handed... making the product. Those arrested were arraigned Wednesday night and sent to the Columbia County Prison in Bloomsburg. The bust is the sixth meth lab raided in Berwick since last December.
It has been a trying year for the Danville Area School District... finding room for students following last September's flooding. But, this year... it's somewhat different... so says Superintendent Cheryl Latorre. She says FEMA and PEMA money was used to bring the district back to what it was before the flood. Ms. Latorre say when school opens Monday.... there will be some confusion... with 6th grade located in the primary school... with 7th and 8th graders headed to the former elementary school... which is now being used as a middle school.
The Bloomsburg Chapter of the American Red Cross continues to look for blood donors... and heading into the Labor Day Holiday next weekend... time is of the essence. The Chapter's Sue Norton says it's been an uphill fight with a lot of regular donors doing other things during the summer. Bloomsburg Airport Money
The Governor's office says the Bloomsburg Airport is in line to receive just over $131,000 in state aviation development funds. It's part of $3.7 – million in grants announced Wednesday. The money will be used for additional site preparation necessary to continue runway extension construction. The Danville Airport... as well as Hazleton are also in line to receive grant money.
A new bridge carrying Evansville Road over the East Branch of Briar Creek... west of Berwick.. has been open to traffic. The new bridge replaces a 33 – foot long span initially built in 1936... and was structurally deficient. The structure is located between Heller Hill and Lights Road in Briar Creek Township.
Penn State's disgraced former president Graham Spanier is going on the offensive. Spanier is trying to convince the public he had no idea that Jerry Sandusky was a child molester... and that he most certainly did not protect one. He started Wednesday with a news conference by his lawyers who said the report on the Sandusky affair by former FBI Director Louis Freeh... is nothing more than a rush to judgment.
Robbery Suspect Caught
The man wanted in connection with robbing a Wilkes – Barre movie theater last weekend is now in custody. However, 33 – year old Sean Flavin didn't go quietly. He held off Watertown, Connecticut police for a while... before he was captured, cuffed and sent to a secure holding facility. He's wanted in connection with Sunday night's robbery of a money bag from a theater employee. No word when Flavin will be extradited back to Luzerne County.
Centax / Berkheimer
The Luzerne County Tax Collection Committe voted last night to end it's contract with Centax... a company that was supposed to collect and distribute earned income tax money. The firm has had trouble doing its job... leaving Luzerne County and its municipalities looking for millions of dollars to pay its bills. Meantime... H.A. Berkheimer will step in... at least temporarily... replacing Centax until the end of the year.
A man who robbed a Shamokin Dam bank of $6,000 last November... will spend anywhere from five to twenty years in state prison. 32 – year old William Cowell of Marysville said he needed the money to pay bills. Police say Cowell walked into the first National Bank on Routes 11 and 15... demanding money from the teller. He left the area in a cab that brought him from Marysville to Shamokin Dam. The cab driver was not implicated in the robbery.
A Hazleton man is in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility on $100,000 bail after he allegedly made terroristic threats against a District Attorney. 43 – year old Sean Donahue is accused of threatening Stefanie Salavantis through a series of e-mails. Donahue was arraigned in front of a District Judge... after he was charged with marking terroristic threats and harassment. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for the 29th of the month.
A Williamsport cardiologist is dead following a water skiing accident in upstate New York State earlier this week. 57 – year old Dr. Christopher Tobiasz was skiing on the St. Lawrence River near Chippewa Bay. But when he attempted to get into the boat from the water... when the propeller sliced open his leg. Dr. Tobiasz was rushed to a hospital in Alexandria Bay... where he was pronounced dead.
This year's boating season on the Susquehanna River near Sunbury is being cut short. Repair work of the Fabridam will prevent the season from being it's usual length. The operators of the dam will deflate two bags damaged during last September’s flooding... so they can be repaired. It will take several months... so that's why the boat season on Lake Augusta will be shortened.
The State’s Department of Environmental Protection is under fire from groups keeping a close eye on the state’s Marcellus Shale production. A report released by the department on natural gas production is flawed according to critics. They say the report does not mention any numbers for Chesapeake Energy Company which has been among the top gas producing companies in the state over the past several reports. Officials with DEP are not apologizing for not mentioning the missing data.
A nine-day trip to Israel, in which a local congressman was involved, is being investigated by the FBI. Congressman Tom Marino of Williamsport... who represents Montour County... joined a group of several congressmen on the trip last August. The trip was paid for by The American Israel Education Foundation. The FBI probed events on the trip that involved drinking, with reports of several intoxicated congressmen and staffers. The report states one member of congress swam naked in the Sea of Galilee after drinking. Although these actions are not illegal, some are questioning the purpose of the trip and what work was accomplished. A statement by Marino’s staff says the congressman was not part of the incident.
Berwick / George Curry
This will be the 43rd season as a head football coach for Berwick's George Curry, but it will be the first time he has a female on his team. Curry has a lot of confidence in sophomore placekicker Olivia Seeley telling WHLM's Jim Doyle she is the real deal. Berwick plays their final preseason scrimmage Thursday night at 6 against Mifflin County at Crispin Field. The Bulldogs open the regular season, Friday night, August 31st at Crestwood
Bronson Arroyo went eight innings... giving up just three hits on 86 pitches to lead the Cincinnati Reds past the Philadelphia Philles 3 to 2 last night at Citizens Bank Park. Try as he might... Philadelphia's Vance Worley didn't have much help from his teammates.. with the loss keeping the Phils in the National League East cellar. Both teams meet again Thursday night for the fourth and final game in their series.
