If you use the Iron Bridge on Millville road... which spans Fishing Creek... you may get delayed a bit. PennDOT's Rick Mason says a contractor will begin inspection work Monday on the 82 – year old bridge... checking out every girder and joint... to see if there are any deficiencies. Mason says a sign crew will be stationed at both sides of the bridge... limiting traffic to one lane at a time. The work is expected to be wrapped up by late Wednesday afternoon.
Hazleton's immigration law will be back in court this week. Lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union and the City of Hazleton will be in front of the US Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia. The Hazleton immigration law bans businesses from hiring.... and landlords from renting to illegal immigrants. However, the law was never enforced. The appearance in front of the 3rd district panel is on orders from the US Supreme Court.
Judging by the car count and the number of people at the fairgrounds... it appears the Bloomsburg Nationals car show... promoted by Carlisle Events of Cumberland County... was a huge success. Jeff Eister of Danville brought his red 1968 Dodge Charger to the event to show. Eister says it's easier to get parts to restore classic cars than what it was 10 to 15 – years ago. The Bloomsburg Nationals returns in August of 2013... with the hope of a bigger and better show.
If you're trying to get through Berwick for the next week... traffic will be a nightmare. Reconstruction of Front Street began late last night when Barletta Materials began working in the northbound lane between LaSalle and Oak Street. PennDOT says the work deals with excavation, placing a sub – base... and paving. That particular project is expected to be wrapped up Saturday.
Construction work continues on Interstate 80 between the Lime Ridge / Berwick and the Mifflinville interchanges. A PennDOT spokesman says the right lane of I-80 eastbound at the Lime Ridge interchange will be closed until until late Monday afternoon... so trucks have access to perform road widening work. And if you try to get on I-80 westbound at Mifflinville... the exit is closed so you must use a well – marked alternate to get on the highway.
They didn't take a formal vote, but the vast majority of Penn State trustees voiced support for the university president Rodney Erickson's acceptance of severe penalties imposed by the NCAA over the school's handling of the Sandusky sex scandal. Board chairwoman Karen Peetz told fellow trustees during a Sunday evening conference call that the panel could not vote because 10 days' notice of the meeting was required... an objection two members raised at the outset of the call. But more than two dozen members of the 32-member board then voiced support for President Erickson's decision and a desire to move forward, although many criticized the NCAA sanctions.
A 35 – year old Benton man is free on bond... after he was picked up over the weekend on three outstanding warrants issued in Indiana. John Lloyd Dildine surrendered to State Police at the Bloomsburg Barracks early Saturday evening. Dildine was arraigned before District Magistrate Judge Marvin Shrawder... and was released on 25 – thousand dollars unsecured bail. Police say Dildine will have an extradition hearing scheduled in Columbia County Court.
A Schuylkill County man is dead after he slipped and fell while biking in the Lehigh Gorge State Park on Sunday. State Police at Hazleton says 44 – year old Lee Mantz of Coaldale stopped to take a snapshot... and apparently lost his footing falling when he stepped on a rock... and ended up in the River. An autopsy is expected to be preformed Monday... but police are ruling the death accidental.
A Freeland man is dead... after he crashed his pick- up truck on Route 93 in Hudsondale... in Packer Township... in Carbon County... southeast of Hazleton. Police say Nathan Hoffman lost control of his truck early Saturday morning... smashed into some trees. He was pronounced dead at the scene. State police at Hazleton are investigating.

Congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton says the selection of US Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as a vice – presidential candidate to Republican Mitt Romney is a pretty smart move. Barletta says Ryan knows the federal budget... inside and out... and will be an invaluable resource on the Republican ticket.
With the season openers just three weeks away, area high school football teams begin preseason practices Monday. Even though his team has worked hard all summer, Berwick coach George Curry is looking forward to the first contact drills. Berwick has their first preseason scrimmage Saturday morning at 11 O'clock against Central Mountain at Crispin Field. The Bulldogs open the regular season August 31st at Crestwood.
The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-7, in 11 innings on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park. With the win, the Phillies took two games out of the three-game set. The winning run was scored when Philadelphia's Juan Pierre hit an infield single... allowing Jimmy Rollins to come home.
