Bloomsburg Police are spending the night investigating... what appears to be... a deadly one car accident on the western end of Ft. McClure Boulevard... near the confluence of the Susquehanna River and Fishing Creek. It happened around 7:45 Thursday evening when a black, compact car, was apparently driving at a high rate of speed... west bound... on Ft. McClure... missed the sharp right hand turn.
The car smashed through a stone memorial... flew through trees and landed upside down in the creek. The identity of the driver... the exact type of car... and how the car ended up in the creek is still under investigation. We'll have more on the WHLM Morning Buzz starting at 6 AM.
National Night Out
Police departments around the country... including the Bloomsburg Police Department... will observe National Night Out next Tuesday night. It will take place at the Norris Rock Memorial swimming pool at the corner of Catherine and Ft. McClure Boulevard starting at 6 O'clock. The event features displays... from the fire department and EMS... as well as area police agencies. Next Tuesday's National Night Out is presented by the Bloomsburg Police Department and the WHLM Stations.
The Bloomsburg University football team is ready to get back into action this fall. The Huskies are coming off a 9 and 2 season... in which they won their first eight games in 2011. Appearing on a recent edition of the WHLM's Morning Buzz.... BU Athletic Director Mike McFarland said despite the search for a quarterback... the defense pretty good. The Huskie's open the 2012 season Friday... August 31st at Stonehill in Easton, Massachusetts.
An estimated 300 people took advantage of a senior expo held Wednesday in Espy... sponsored by State Representative David Millard. Betty Harter of Lime Ridge got out of the house... and traveled south on Old Berwick Road to attend the expo. Ms. Harter told WHLM News she had an opportunity to take a look at services offered by vendors... and to meet and make new friends.
A 28 – year old Hazleton man is in jail... after he allegedly robbed the owner of a business in the 6 – hundred block of Alter Street. The incident happened Wednesday morning. Police say Shawn Shafer was cuffed by officers... but he got away briefly... and was apprehended the second time. Bail for Shafer was set at $150,000.
Hazleton city police will have a greater presence at the downtown bus station on Church Street. In essence... Hazleton Public Transit will pay the police department for increased patrols... supplementing a private security firm... in order to satisfy federal funding criteria. In the past... there have been troubles with panhandling... loitering... and thefts at the intermodal facility. HPT has pegged the cost of the city police at between $10,000 to $20,000 a year.
A store in Conyngham has been notified it has sold a $1 – million lottery ticket. The Party Beverage has been told someone purchased a winning Millionaire Raffle lottery ticket... through an on – line machine. The PA Lottery website says people who purchased a ticket has a 1 in 2,500 chance of winning the jackpot when the numbers were drawn on July 7th. The person with the winning ticket hasn't come forward.
A 47 – year old Northumberland woman remains free on bail... after she was accused of pilfering an estimated $16,000 from her elderly aunt's bank account. Published reports say Elizabeth Peterson waived her right to a preliminary hearing this week... sending the case to Montour County Court. It's alleged Ms. Peterson had the power of attorney for her aunt who lives in a nursing home in Mahoning Township... and had used the money for her and her husband... with the alleged scheme coming to an end when she tried to use money in the account for her son's college tuition. Peterson is free on $10,000 unsecured bail.
Berwick Home Invasion
Berwick police are remaining tight lipped about a home invasion late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... two men had stepped outside the home to walk some dogs...but when they returned they were faced with two other men... wearing masks. The homeowner and his friend were hustled off to a waiting car and driven around. The one man escaped... the second was let go. The home invaders are still on the loose. Police haven't identified the men... or where the house was located.
A 45 – year old Danville woman... who is the former treasurer of a Boy Scout troop... will spend 30 – days in jail. Tracey Lee Myers embezzled funds from Troop 37 for four years... taking just over $4,000. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition that Myers has made restitution. The money was used to pay household and personal expenses.
Jimmy Rollins hit two home runs... and Vance Worley and Nate Schierholtz pitched well as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Washington National's Wednesday night 3 to 2. The victory ensured the Phillies winning the series. Philadelphia and Washington play Thursday night in the District. With the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series headed for Pocono Raceway this weekend... there will be one less driver. A-J Allmendinger has been fired by Penske Motorsports for testing positive... the second time... for having banned substances in his system. He had been suspended... but when a second drug test came back positive... Roger Penske had no other option. For the time being... Sam Hornish will drive Penske's No. 22 Dodge.
The 2012 Olympics in London continue... and the medal count keeps rising. China has snagged 17 gold medals... 30 in all.... while the United States remains second with 12 gold... and 29 overall. The Republic of Korea is third... winning six gold and 12 total. The figure is expected to change throughout the day.
