Fatal Bike Accident

A retired Southern Columbia school teacher is dead after he lost control of his mountain bike.... and slammed into a pick – up truck Monday outside of Catawissa. Montour Township Police Chief Terry Eckert identified the victim as 65 year old Ed Rhoades of Catawissa. The accident happened Old Reading Road in Catawissa Township. The name of the driver of the pick up truck was not released since he's a juvenile. Chief Eckert says he will not be charged in the accident.

 

Berwick Man Charged

A Berwick man has been charged with killing a man in Erie... in northwest Pennsylvania... earlier this month. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition... 28 – year old Michael James allegedly shot and killed a man during a street fight earlier this month. James... at one time... was considered the nation's best sophomore football players. James and Teverous Williams had been at a bar just prior to the shooting. James faces a preliminary hearing August 6th... and remains in the Erie County Prison without bond.

 

Mahanoy City Fire

Fire investigators are trying to figure out what started a pre – dawn blaze in six vacant homes in neighboring Schuylkill County. The fire was spotted in row homes early Monday morning on North Main Street in Mahanoy City. Our media partner NewsWatch 16 says the homes have been vacant since the flood of 2006... and had been on the list to be torn down.

 

Senior Expo

The highly – anticipated Senior Expo hosted by State Representative David Millard of Millville is Wednesday at the Espy Fire Hall. Hundreds of people over 60 will be there. So will vendors with information on the latest programs geared towards senior Citizens... according to Representative Millard. The expo begins at 9 AM... and runs for three hours at the Espy Fire Hall at Tenny and 3rd Streets. In addition to vendors... there will be plenty of door prizes and giveaways.

 

Town Hall Meeting

State Representative Doyle Heffley... will be in Beaver Meadows... a few miles southeast of Hazleton this Thursday. A spokesman for Heffley says it's the first in a series of outreach events he'll be holding this summer for constituents. This one takes place at the Beaver Meadows Borough Hall starting at 8 AM. Heffley says he and his staffers will have information dealing with state agencies... and different programs offered to seniors by the state.

 

Gas Prices

Gas Prices across northeastern Pennsylvania are holding steady. The latest Triple – A Fuel Gauge report shows that self – serve unleaded regular was averaging $3.44 a gallon... that's down a penny from the weekend... and holding steady from a week ago. Thirty days ago... pump prices were averaging $3.23 a gallon.

 

Sullivan County Accident

A man from western Pennsylvania died over the weekend when he was electrocuted in Sullivan County. State Police at Dushore tell WHLM News 21 – year old Nathan McCandless was erecting wildlife data survey equipment off Maple Summit Road in Fox Township... when an aluminum pole came in contact with an overhead power line. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

Shank Attack

A 22 – year old inmate at SCI – Coal Township has been charged with attempted homicide. Ramon Frazier is accused of stabbing another inmate in the neck with a six inch shank... which required emergency hospitalization. The incident took place last December on the facilities basketball court. Police say the incident may have been gang related.

Field Hockey

The Bloomsburg University field hockey team, the reigning PSAC champions, will open its 2012 season at home on Thursday, August 30th against Adelphi at 3 p.m. The Huskies 2012 season will feature an 18-game schedule evenly split with nine home and nine away games. Bloomsburg's longest home stand will be four games starting with its PSAC opener against Seton Hill on September 8th and continuing till September 15th against Mercyhurst.
 

Philadelphia Phillies

Following a day off for travel... the Philadelphia Phillies get back into the swing of things Tuesday night. The Phils begin a three game series with the red hot Washington Nationals in DC. Left handed pitcher Cliff Lee will be on the mound for the Phills... while right hander Stephen Stratsburg tosses for the Nats. You can catch all the action of Tuesday night's match up starting with the pre – game show at 6:30... the first pitch expected at 7:05... on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.
