Flood Protection

Now that the federal government has told Bloomsburg it doesn't plan to fund a floodwall for the west end of the town... discussion now has to turn to alternate solutions. That word from Mayor Dan Knorr. He says initial discussions should include the fact there could be a lot of local costs if the town and Columbia County decide to do a flood prevention program. Until a solution is reached... folks sandwiched in the area between the Susquehanna and Fishing Creek will have to keep an eye on the water... and take preventative actions if the waterways begin to rise.

 

Back Branch Road

Back Branch Road in Mt. Pleasant Township is now open to traffic. The four mile long... two lane road had been closed since early June when PennDOT began a project to stabilize a bank... along Fishing Creek... that experienced severe erosion during last year's Lee flooding. PennDOT getting help from the Department of Environmental Protection. Embankment restoration... roadway work and guardrail installation have been completed... now there will be some minor touch up work preformed by PennDOT crews.

 

Park Concert

The night the music slowly came to an end Wednesday night at Bloomsburg's Town Park as the Summer Concert Series ran its course. Entertainment for those who showed up last night was furnished by Selinsgrove – based Gift, Troutman and Gift. Now.... Town Park Association President Chuck Wagner turns his attention to the 55th annual Ice Cream and Cake Festival on August 9th. Thousands of people are expected for the festival... with planned entertainment the Catawissa Military Band and the Covered Bridge Cloggers.

 

Well Rescue

It was a close call for a Hunlock Creek Township man on Wednesday. After lowering himself into a 5 foot cinder block well pit along Sorberton Hill Road with a ladder... that device gave way leaving him trapped. He was eventually extracted by the Luzerne County Technical Rescue team. The unidentified man complained of back and leg pain and was taken to an area hospital after being brought to the surface.

 

Dead Pitbulls

Police in Tamaqua... south of Hazleton... are investigating the deaths of nine pit bulls. The dog's bodies were discovered in a dumpster by a man looking in the containers. No one is claiming ownership to the dogs. An autopsy will be preformed on two of the dogs to determine how they died.

 

Drug Raid

A West Hazleton Cigarette Superstore was the target of a Wednesday morning raid by police and drug agents. It's all part of a crack down on synthetic drugs. The raid took place at Puff and Stuff on North Fourth Street. Although boxes of evidence was taken... there were no arrests. Police say the raid was part of Operation Artificial High designed to eliminate designer drugs.

 

Quarry Hearing

A hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday at the Dorrance Township Fire Department dealing with the expansion of a quarry owned by Pennsy Supply. The company wants to operate minor crushing operations 24 hours a day. That may not set well with the folks who live near the quarry. Tuesday's hearing begins at 6:30 PM.

 

Service Awards

An award for Geisinger Health Systems. The Geisinger Medical Center System Therapeutics Department has received an award for Courageous Service by the American Society of Heath – System Pharmacist. The award was given during a convention in Baltimore. The GMC department received the award for it's efforts to serve patients following the catastrophic flood of the fall of 2011.

 

Jamboree Folo

Bloomsburg Police telling us the 4 Wheel Truck Jamboree of a few weeks ago... for the most part... a pretty quiet affair. However, there were some problems... with police telling us that out of 34 traffic stops... 21 people were given warnings... with traffic citations given out to 13 people. Overall... the state police... Liquor Control Enforcement... and local police departments citing 11 for underage drinking... 2 violating the open container law... one person charged with public drunkenness... and two DUI arrests.

 

Boosters Club

Athletic boosters in the Warrior Run School District say they want to finance and maintain a proposed soccer and track complex on the school campus. One plan calls for $3 – million to construct the complex... and another $2 - million to maintain the site. The boosters say they have the money... but any project won't get underway until a non – profit foundation is established.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Philles rattled off their fourth consecutive win on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 7 to 6 in 10 innings. The win completes a sweep over the Brew Crew... and moves the Phillies' record to 8 and 4 since the All – Star break. The hero Wednesday afternoon... Jimmy Rollins who slammed an RBI single. The Phillies have Thursday off… ahead of a three-game set in Atlanta which starts Friday. You can catch all the action with the pre -game show at 7 O'clock... with the first pitch scheduled for 7:35... on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.

 

Hamels Contract

The Phillies have announced they've signed pitcher Cole Hamels to a six year... 144 – million dollar contract extension. It's the longest contract in Philadelphia sports history. The deal will pay Hamels nearly $20 – million next season... and $22.5 - million from 2014 through 2018... and includes a $6 - million signing bonus.
