Catawissa Fire Folo
The investigation is continuing into a pre – dawn house fire in the 500 block of Pine Street in Catawissa, which took place Wednesday. The fire was first spotted by a neighbor around 5:30... then Catawissa police officer Jason Hayes arrived... getting four people out of the burning structure and to safety. 79 – year old Barbara Lewis... her 51 – year old son Blair and his two sons are now being helped by the American Red Cross.
A Salem Township man... is facing homicide charges as the result of a drunk driving crash back in January of 2011. 51 – year old Theodore Luciw's pick up truck collided with a car driven by 84 – year old Rachel Wolfe... who was trying to turn from Route 11 into Bell Bend Road. Ms. Wolfe died a short time after the crash. The long list of charges were filed by Luzerne County District Attorney Stephanie Salavantis. This is not the first time Luciw has faced drunk driving charges.. Luzerne County records show he was arrested this past April for drunken driving.
With severe weather hitting Columbia and Montour County's occasionally... it's important for the National Weather Service to have 'boots' on the ground to assess damage. An estimate 30 people went through a SkyWarn class Wednesday night in order to become the eyes and ears of the NWS. Meteorologist Peter Jung (Young) of the State College office of the NWS says SkyWarn spotters are an important part of the system. And that... according to Jung is where the spotters come in since they have knowledge of their particular area of a county.
Four people... who ran from police near Mifflinville yesterday... are now charged with allegedly running a meth lab. Police capturing two women... and two men... as they raided their makeshift campsite on River Road. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition that the four face a long list of drug related charges.
If you're using the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Mifflinville... it will be a slow – go thorough the area most of Thursday. PennDOT spokesperson Rick Mason says the right lane of the 80... westbound... will be closed today for a dry run of a concrete – deck pour. The actual work for part of the $50 – million bridge construction project over Route 339 and the Susquehanna River takes place early Friday morning.

Groundbreaking was held Wednesday for a new hotel at the Mohegan Sun Casino near Wilkes – Barre in Luzerne County. The facility will have an estimated 240 rooms and a convention center. The project means hundreds of jobs in the building trades... and once finished more jobs for folks working in the service industry. The complex is expected to be open by the end of 2013.
Jim Thorpe... in Carbon County... has been named one of the five most beautiful towns in America. That distinction coming from an on – line contest hosted by Rand McNally... and USA Today. Jim Thorpe coming in number four. Topping the list was Bardstown, Kentucky... near Louisville.
Investigators are trying to figure out why an SUV driven by a Port Treverton man... drifted across the highway and slammed head on into a car Tuesday night on the Veterans Memorial Bridge. The collision killed 22 – year old Kirk Mahaffey of Northumberland... and his 3 – year old Mayson. Police say Mahaffey was not wearing a seat belt... while the child was in a car seat, but not appropriate for his age. 24 – year old Brian Glass was behind the wheel of the Jeep Liberty. His passenger was his brother, 19 – year old Cody. Both are in Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
As the NCAA considers whether Penn State should face penalties following the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal — including a possible shutdown of its celebrated football program — the university says it will respond within days to the governing body's demand for information. The head of the NCAA has declared that the so-called death penalty has not been ruled out for Penn State. But university president Rodney Erickson said Tuesday he doesn't want to jump to conclusions about possible sanctions.
Players from nine high school football teams will be involved in a 7 on 7 passing tournament and a big man's competition this Saturday at Crispin Field in Berwick. Area teams including Mount Carmel, Southern Columbia, Danville, Northwest, and Berwick will join Delaware Valley, Manheim Central, and Blue Mountain in the passing competition. Loyalsock will be part of the big man's competition which includes weightlifting and agility drills for linemen. Saturday's activities at Crispin Field in Berwick begins at 10 O'clock.
Try as they might... the Philadelphia Phillies were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. The final score 5 to 3. With the game tied at 3 to 3 in the 12th... LA's Matt Kemp and hit a walkoff two – run homer to win the game. The Phillies have Thursday off... but will start a three game series with the San Francisco Giants tomorrow night at Citizens Bank Park.
