United Water

Will Hummleston – based United Water ever move their Bloomsburg Irondale Road plant? That's a question which will soon be answered. During last September's flooding the plant was knocked out by a rapidly rising Fishing Creek... and despite a million gallon reservoir... Bloomsburg lost its water service for about a week. Since that time... there has been talk of moving the plant... and the utility's Bob Manbeck says the plan has been placed on the back burner... until the results of a study are released in September. At one time... preliminary figures indicated it would cost United Water up to $17 – million to move the plant to higher grounds.

 

Iron Heritage Festival

With the Iron Heritage Festival getting underway later this week in Danville... a lot of attention has been given to a recreated coal dredger. The I-H-F's Lynn Richen says coal dredgers were important to the economy and our way of life... when chunks of Anthracite coal would come rolling down the Susquehanna River from the mines in Luzerne and Lackawanna County's. The recreated coal dredger will be on display... on the river... at the foot of Ferry Street in Danville all weekend. The event gets underway with a parade which kicks off Friday night at 7 O'clock.

 

Alcohol Program / Bloomsburg

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has awarded a little more than $17,000 to the Bloomsburg Police Department aimed at preventing underage and dangerous alcohol use. The state says the money is part of a million dollars awarded through the 2012 – 2013 Alcohol Education Grant Program. The grant helps fund prevention programs focused on underage and college – age alcohol consumption and support related law – enforcement activities.

 

State Trooper Busted

A Pennsylvania State Trooper who lives in the Tamaqua area is accused of being drunk while on duty. 47 – year old Kevin Wackley was relieved of his duties last week after being arrested on a DUI charge... while driving a state issued cruiser. The issue with Wackley surfaced when he met with a police chief near the Hamburg barracks where he works. The chief noticing the trooper was intoxicated and called his boss. Wackley has been suspended without pay and faces a hearing at a future date.

 

Hazleton Officers Hurt

Two Hazleton police officers were injured over the weekend when trying to subdue a 23 – year old Hazleton man. Reinaldo Hernandez – Montanez faces a long list of charges after an early Sunday morning dust up with two officers. Both spotting Hernandez – Montanez running on 4th street. During the scuffle... officer Nicholas Stetchak's right knee was injured and his forearm scraped... while his partner.. Robert Minnick sustained left knee and a forearm injury. Hernandez – Montanez is currently in jail.

 

United Way Grant

The Northern Columbia Community and Cultural center in Benton has received a grant from the United Way of Columbia County. A spokesman for the organization says the $9,200 grant will allow the N4C to provide safe, fun and exciting activities for kids who live in northern Columbia County.

 

Paterno Family

The family of long – time Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno says they'll launch their own investigation into the Sandusky sex scandal. They're also discounting former FBI Director Louis Freeh's 267 page report which said Paterno and other university officials covered up for Sandusky to avoid bad publicity. Sandusky is in the Centre County jail... convicted last month on 45 counts of sexually abusing boys over a 15 – year period.

 

Costas Opinion

There is still some fall out based on the Louis Freeh report released late last week dealing with the Sandusky scandal at Penn State. Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday.... Bob Costas.... a mainstay at NBC Sports is suggesting that the football season for the university be suspended for at least a year. Costas went on to say... if the school doesn't suspend the season... the NCAA will have it's own sanctions.

 

NEPA Gas Prices

The Triple A fuel gauge report out shows self – serve, unleaded regular across northeastern Pennsylvania is holding steady at $3.36 a gallon... the same as it was over the weekend... but up seven cents for the week. A month ago... we were paying an average of $3.34 a gallon.

Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia's Ryan Howard hit the ball out of the park for the first time this season... and Joe Blanton kept the ball in the park... as the Phillies defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday night 3 to 2. Howard homered leading off the fourth inning for his first RBI in six games... while Blanton pitched eight innings. The Phillies and the Dodgers meet again Tuesday night in LA. You can catch all the action by tuning into the pre – game show at 9:35... with the first pitch scheduled for 10:10 on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.

 

Regional Baseball Action

In other regional MLB action Monday night... the Colorado Rockies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 4... while the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6 to 3.
