PPL crews continue to work in order to restore power to parts of Columbia County following a small, but violent storm which swept through the Susquehanna Valley Sunday afternoon. At last check on the PPL outage website... an estimated 1,500 subscribers are without electricity. The biggest problem appears to be on the Hemlock – Mt. Pleasant Township line. Other dark places around the county include Madison and Orange Townships... and an area around the BIDA Complex in Berwick.
The Bloomsburg Fairgrounds are quiet this morning... but that wasn't the case over the weekend when the 25th anniversary Summer 4 Wheel Drive Jamboree took place. Thousands of people came through the turnstiles. Next up at the fairgrounds.... thousands of classic automobiles... part of a huge car show promoted by Carlisle Events of Cumberland County the second weekend in August.
Senior Expo / Millard
Columbia County senior citizens looking for help with their problems on the state level shouldn't look any further than the August 1st Senior Expo in Scott Township. It's being hosted by state representative David Millard of Millville. The expo begins at 9 AM at the Espy fire hall on the 1st... and anywhere from four to five hundred people are expected to attend.
Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital
The Bloomsburg Hospital has been part of our lives for the past hundred years or so... and now they've turned the page. As of this month... Bloomsburg and its affiliates have merged with Danville – based Geisinger Health Systems. Bloomsburg town councilman Fred Trump telling WHLM News he sees a lot of positive changes coming out of the merger. The merger will allow Geisinger – Bloomsburg to have access to up to date medical care... and it starts with the installation of a multi – million dollar computer and data system.
A Saturday night slap down in Hazleton... at the corner of North Wyoming and Green Streets. Police aren't saying much, but they do say that two women were fighting. A large crowd showed up for the main event... but apparently no one was hurt. Also... no one was taken into custody.
Police in West Hazleton are now searching for a person wanted in an attempted arson of a vacant home on East Broad Street. It happened Saturday night... when smoke from a phone book left on a lit stove burner found its way throughout the structure. Police were called... and they found an empty gas can and a bathtub full of kerosene. If you have information about this attempted arson... call west Hazleton Police.
Still on the loose Monday... a man who escaped from the MinSec halfway house in Hazleton. State police say they're looking for 39 – year old Richard Hazleton who was wrapping up his prison sentence. But instead of returning by late afternoon... he disappeared into thin air. Police issuing a warrant for Hazleton on escape charges.
State Police still investigating the death of a man near Lairdsville in Lycoming over the weekend. Police say 26 – year old Timothy Wehr of Ohio died Saturday afternoon when he was run over by a dump truck on a gas well pad... as he was installing water lines. At the time, Wehr was working for Integrity Pipeline Services.
Philadelphia's Cole Hamels had gone nearly a month without a victory. But the left-hander had it working against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Sunday. He allowed one run over eight innings as the Phillies defeated the Colorado Rockies 5 to 1. The victory was Hamels' 11th of the season. Hunter Pence provided the big blow with a three-run homer in the fifth. The Phils now travel to Los Angeles with a three game series with the Dodgers.
