Freeh Report

The 267 – page report authored by former FBI Director Louis Freeh is shaking Penn State University to its core. It deals with the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case. In it... Freeh says Tim Curley... Gary Schultz... Graham Spanier and Joe Paterno knew of a 1998 criminal investigation into Sandusky's suspected sexual misconduct. Freeh says the Board of Trustees was not aware of the allegations against Sandusky in 1998 and 2001... however that does not shield the board from criticism.

 

Truck Jamboree

It's a gear head's delight this weekend at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds. The 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals Series makes its 25th appearance in Bloomsburg.... with thousands of pick up trucks... either competing or in town for the show and shine events. The event is expected to pump hundreds of thousands of dollars into the Columbia – Montour County economy. The show begins Friday... and runs through Sunday at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds.

 

Scam

United Water of Pennsylvania subscribers are being alerted to a scam claiming that the government is providing credits or applying payments to utility bills. Although it hasn't happened in United Water's service area... which includes Bloomsburg... the Utility's Bob Manbeck says someone will call and providing a bank routing number. But instead of the water company getting a payment... it goes into a scammer's bank account. Manbeck says... in the end... customer's don't get any credit... and are responsible for the bill. Also... the scammer's are using e-mail... testing and social media to reach utility customers.

 

Bridge Demolition

If you take a look at the northside of the Double Track Bridge on Bloomsburg's west side... leading to Fernville... it's gone. Workers spent Thursday loading old concrete in the back of huge dump trucks to be carted away. It's part of a $1 – million contract PennDOT has with Glenn Hawbaker, Incorporated to demolish the bridge... as well as install a traffic signal and add turn lanes at Route 42 and Perry Avenue.

The concrete structure was opened to traffic in 1923... and replaced a wooden bridge built on the site in 1840 to connect Bloomsburg's west end with Fernville.

 

Iron Heritage Festival

Now that Doc's Shoe Store in Danville has been knocked down... Mill Street in the Montour County community will be opened for next weekend's Iron Heritage Festival. Organizer Lynn Richen says most of the festival will take place right along Mill Street. Danville's Iron Heritage festival kicks off with a parade next Friday at 7 O'clock.

 

Hazleton Cocaine

One man is in jail in Luzerne County... after tussling with cops... with police saying they were exposed to cocaine. It happened during a traffic stop earlier this week when Joseph Babbitt was pulled over and drugs were found in his car. A strip search at police headquarters found Babbitt was storing the cocaine inside his body. Police say he tried to eat it, but instead the bag burst... sending a cloud of the drug at the officers.

 

Shooting Sentence

A Hazleton man was sentenced from anywhere from 10 to 20 years in prison for a deadly Luzerne County shooting. Jaboar Stanley was sentenced in court Thursday for his May guilty plea in the shooting death of Emanuel Felix back in 2011. The shooting stemmed from an argument which broke out during a poker game.

 

Luzerne Clerk

Luzerne County has its first permanent clerk who will serve the County Council. 24 – year old Brittany Burgess of Scranton takes over from Colette Check... who has been the clerk to council since the first of the year. Burgess' job includes motions and resolutions for council... preparing agenda... and conducting research. Her salary... $40,000 a year.

 

Berwick Traffic

A portion of the final phase of the paving of Front and Second Streets in Berwick begins late Friday night. PennDOT spokesman Rick Mason says that starting Friday night at 10... Barletta Construction will preform paving work on Route 11 southbound... between LaSalle and Iron Streets. That means Route 93 at Front Street... and the northbound entrance to LaSalle Street will be closed. However, there will be a single lane of traffic... southbound on Route 11... with traffic controlled by construction workers. The project will be wrapped by late Sunday evening.

 

Shikellamy Grant

The Shikellamy School District in Northumberland County is one of 61 organizations getting nearly $20 – million as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Challenge Grant. State Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis said Shikellamy will receive $399,000. Tomalis went on to say that the grant is to fund community learning centers for high poverty and low performing schools.

Philadelphia Phillies

For the first time since Sunday... the Philadelphia Phillies will play some baseball. They'll take on the Colorado Rockies in Denver Friday night... blowing off the rust they've accumulated during the All – Star break. Cliff Lee will be on the mound for the Phils... while Christian Friedrich will toss for the Rockies. You can catch all the action of Friday night's match-up starting with the pre – game show at 8:05... with the first pitch expected at 8:40... on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.

 

Roy to Return

Pitcher Roy Halladay is closer to re-joining the Phils. As a Clearwater Thresher.... he pitched a three – inning rehab stint against the Class A Fort Myers Miracle Thursday night. Halladay was pulled from the Phillie's rotation in May after straining some muscles in his back. It's believed he's headed to Colorado to rejoin the club... and could be on the mound as early as Tuesday when Philadelphia faces Los Angeles.
