Weekend Storm

Public works crews will spend part Monday cleaning up the mess left behind by a late Saturday afternoon storm which marched through Columbia County. The hardest hit area was the north County area... especially in the Benton Township area. Brian Bower was on the family farm off of Waller Road when the storm arrived. He described skies darkening around 4:30 PM.... the wind kicking up and rain falling horizontally through his pole barn. Pennsylvania Power & Light crews had a mess on their hands restoring power to 1,100 subscribers in Benton... and another 1,400 in Bloomsburg. The utility is still reporting scattered outages... all north of the Susquehanna River.

 

David Millard / Budget

Slowly, but surly, an idea is gaining traction in Harrisburg dealing with budget preparation... changing from a yearly budget to one that is 24 months long... with tweaks at the end of the first year. That would cut down on the time it takes to craft a one year spending plan... according to State Representative David Millard of Millville. Representative Millard serves on the house appropriations committee. It's not known if lawmakers will ever explore the proposals... but it's one, according to Millard, that needs to be looked at.

 

Berwick United Way

The Berwick United Way has a new person in the office heading up the operation. Ginny Crake is from Berwick originally... and has returned home to run the organization. Ms. Crake said one of the goals is to address community needs through an assessment study and workshops as to where the United Way's funding needs to go to.

 

Gordner / Safe Haven

It is “Safe Haven Day” across Pennsylvania. State Senator John Gordner of Berwick says the day comes a decade after an infant was found dead in Northumberland County landfill. Safe Haven day calls attention to the law that allows parents of newborns to safely abandon them at medical facilities... without the fear of prosecution.

 

Rubbish Fire

Did you hear the Bloomsburg fire siren go off moments before 4 Monday morning? Firemen were initially dispatched to 2 East Third Street for a rubbish fire on the sidewalk. It was checked out by Fire Chief Bob Rupp... and with few flames and no danger... he ordered all apparatus to be held in quarters.

 

Plymouth Shooting

Two teens from the Philadelphia area are in the Luzerne County Prison... charged with murder following a deadly shooting in Plymouth over the weekend. 18 – year old Shawn Hamilton and 16 – year old Sawud Davis are charged with shooting 4 people in a First Street apartment in Plymouth Saturday night. Three died... including a 15 – year old girl. A fourth person remains hospitalized. Police say the shootings are a result of an alleged drug deal.

 

Freeland Fire

An electrical malfunction is being blamed for an attic fire in a home in the 1100 block of Walnut Street in Freeland over the weekend. Saturday evening's blaze in the double home was confined to the attic at 1110 Walnut. Authorities say the family who lived there are staying temporarily with friends.

 

Wal-Mart Theft

State Police are looking for three people who allegedly distracted a cashier at a Wal – Mart store in Hazle Township... making off with money from the cash register. The incident happened on June 29th... with police getting involved with the probe at the start of the weekend. One thing in favor of investigators... they have surveillance video of the crime as it went down. Police say all three got into a gold mini – van to make their escape.

The Philadelphia Phillies go down to defeat once again. The Atlanta Braves defeated the Phil's 4 to 3. Philadelphia heads into the All – Star break with the worst record since 1997. The Phil's return to action Friday night... when they meet the Colorado Rockies in Denver. You can catch the action starting with the pre – game show at 8:05.... with the first pitch to be thrown at 8:40 on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.

 

Pittsburgh / San Francisco

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue their winning ways Sunday. Andrew McCutchen belted a pair of home runs as Pittsburgh downed the San Francisco Giants 13 to 2.

 

New York Mets / Chicago Cubs

In other action... the New York Mets were defeated by the Chicago Cub 7 to nothing.

 

New York Yankees / Boston Red Sox

The New York Yankees cruised by the Boston Red Sox 7 to 3.
