Murder Investigation Underway
Pennsylvania State Police at Bloomsburg are investigating a homicide which took place Tuesday in Hemlock Township. Police say 46 – year old Frank Spencer was found dead in his home on Fairview Drive... near Millville Road. An all points bulletin issued early Tuesday evening said authorities are looking for 2003 Ford F-150 pick up truck... a Harley Davidson edition... that apparently belonged to the victim. The occupant or occupants are considered armed. At midday Tuesday, Bloomsburg Fire Police were used to shut down Millville Road at Fairview Drive while police conducted their investigation.
There are plenty of things to do Wednesday in Columbia County as we celebrate the 4th of July. The 83rd Annual Millville Fireman's Carnival continues after Wednesday's annual 4th of July parade. The parade forms at Woolcock Oil, north of Millville.... and steps off at 10 AM. You can hear a description of the parade starting at 10:30 on News Radio 930... 94.7 and 104.3... as well as Berwick's 1280. It ends at the Carnival grounds where low level fireworks take place Wednesday night at 10 O'clock. In Bloomsburg... the continuation of the annual Summer Concert Series starting at 8 O'clock. The Catawissa Military Band will preform... with fireworks starting at dusk.
Police Target Drivers
State and local police, along with PennDOT, will take part in a national enforcement effort through July 8 targeting motorists who drive under the influence. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement effort will focus on keeping Pennsylvania’s roads safe during the Independence Day travel period. Over last year’s Independence Day holiday travel period, there were 897 crashes and 14 fatalities. Of those, according to PennDOT, 146 crashes and six fatalities were alcohol-related. During 2011 there were 11,778 alcohol-related crashes in Pennsylvania, according to PennDOT data, in which 425 people were killed. In 2010, there were 11,682 alcohol-related crashes, according to PennDOT, in which 444 people were killed.
PPL's Unit 1
Unit 1 at PPL's Susquehanna Steam Electric station... in Salem Township... north of Berwick is up and running... producing power. It was initially taken down to investigate and repair a small water leak inside the containment structure surrounding the nuclear reactor. Crews repaired a weld where the leak was found... and also conducted other inspections. PPL says both unit 1 and 2 have a generating capacity of roughly 1,250 megawatts of power.

Locust Twp Bridge
PennDOT says rehabilitation work has been completed on an old bridge on Ideal Park Road in Locust Township... on Columbia County's south side. The agency's Rick Mason says crews replaced a timber – deck structure with a new channel – bean deck which spans Roaring Creek. Mason adds that a detour which had been in effect since May... has now been removed.
Hazleton firefighters not only had to battle flames at a double home on West Diamond Avenue... but the heat and humidity as well. The blaze was discovered at mid – afternoon at the home in the 500 block of West Diamond. Firemen finding a tough working fire to fight. The blaze forcing two families out into the street. Investigators now trying to figure out what started that fire on West Diamond Avenue in Hazleton.
Former House Speaker Jailed
Former House Speaker Bill DeWeese of Greene County... convicted of illegally using public tax dollars for campaign purposes... is now jailed at State Correctional Institution Retreat in Luzerne County... near Hunlock Creek. Specifically... DeWeese was convicted earlier this year on theft... conspiracy... and conflict of interest when he used staffers for campaigning. He is to serve a 2 and a half to five year prison sentence.
To say the least... the Philadelphia Phillies were hammered Tuesday night in the first of three games with the New York Mets. The Phil's lost 11 to 1 at Citi Field in the Big Apple. Philadelphia pitcher Vance Worley was shell – shocked. The Phil's will try and get it's act together Wednesday afternoon as they take on the Mets.
