Jewelry Theft

Still no one in custody in connection with the theft of several rings from a display case at Sneidman's Jewelry store at 130 E. Main Street in Bloomsburg. Police telling us the theft took place last Thursday afternoon when a woman made off with an estimated $3,000 worth of rings. The woman was accompanied by an unidentified man.... and police say there is surveillance video. If you have information about the theft... call Bloomsburg police at 784 – 6779.

 

Millville Parade

The annual 4th of July Millville firemen's parade through the streets of the Borough is an event all of us anticipate every year. The parade is held in conjunction with the fireman's carnival which began over the weekend. On Wednesday... the parade's theme will be the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Millville Fire Company... so says parade chairman Jeremy Reese. Mt. Carmel / Barletta

What's a parade without a politician or two tossed into the mix. That was the case Saturday as the borough of Mount Carmel and the Six County Firemen's Association held a combined parade through the streets. 11th District Congressman Lou Barletta was there... and he told WHLM News that despite the US Supreme Court upholding Obamacare... he will continue to fight it's enactment... and a lot depends on the presidential election in November. Congressman Barletta says he has voted an estimated 30 times prior to the high court's decision to repeal the Obama health care measure.

 

Traffic Grant

Danville and Mahoning Township have been awarded a grant to cut down on aggressive driving. It's a similar type of grant Bloomsburg received recently for aggressive driving and jay walking. Bob Schaeffer of the PA Traffic Safety Network says the borough and township will use roving patrols and traffic enforcement zones. Schaeffer said the majority of the enforcement will be conducted on Route 54 leading from Interstate 80 into Danville.

 

Ricketts Glen

An investigation is underway to determine how a woman fell 50 feet while hiking near a water fall at Ricketts Glen state park near Benton. Authorities say the the trail where the women fell was a mile inside the park... making it difficult for rescuers. She was eventually packaged and transported to the entrance of the park where she was taken by ambulance to a Wilkes – Barre hospital.

 

Stabbing

Police in northern Schuylkill County... near Hometown... are looking for a hitchhiker who stabbed a man who gave him a ride. The incident happened last night... with the stabbing taking place near a Wal-Mart parking lot entrance. Police say the hitchhiker stabbed the man in the neck with a knife. The unidentified man was airlifted to a trauma center in the Lehigh Valley for treatment.

 

Hazleton Ordinances

You may see some changes in Hazleton... if police chief Frank DeAndrea has his way. DeAndrea says he plans to go to City Council with a dozen proposed ordinances. The proposals would cover everything from permits for parades... vehicle for hire inspections... regulations for pawn shops and snow emergencies. DeAndrea says he hopes to present the proposals to Council this month... so they can be enacted by the end of August.

 

Hazleton Parks

Hazleton City Council says it wants to curb late night noise and activity at one of it's parks. The James Street Playground will soon be targeted due to litter and late – night noise... as well as other recreational areas. Mayor Joseph Yannuzzi said with warm weather... complaints about noise litter and traffic increase. Now... Police Chief Frank DeAndrea plans to present a proposal to council calling for the parks to be open from dawn to dusk... rather from 5 AM to 9 PM.

 

State Budget

Governor Corbett has signed into law... a $27.7- million state budget for the 2012 – 2013 fiscal year. The governor placing pen to paper late Saturday night... moments before the stroke of midnight. It's the second year in a row... the budget has been signed before the state – mandated July 1st deadline.

 

Sandusky Folo

E-mails have surfaced showing former Penn State President Graham Spanier decided not to take allegations of sexual abuse on the part of Jerry Sandusky to authorities. However, the e-mail obtained by CNN shows Spanier worried he would be “vulnerable” for failing to report it to authorities. The e-mails were generated after a graduate assistant reported in 2001 that he saw Sandusky in a shower room. Sandusky was eventually convicted last month of 45 of 48 counts of sexually abusing ten boys over a 15 – year period of time.

The Philadelphia Phillies couldn't get enough runs to support Joe Blanton Sunday afternoon... loosing to the Miami Marlins 5 to 2. As a matter of fact... the Marlins swept all three games of the series. The Phil's have the day off to regroup... but a three game series with the New York Mets starts Tuesday night. Phillies / All Stars

There was some good news Sunday for the Philadelphia Phillies. Three players were named to the all star team: pitchers Cole Hamels and Jonathan Paplebon and catcher Carlos Ruiz. The All Star game will be played in Kansas City on July 10th.

 

Tiger Wins

In golf on Sunday... Tiger Woods won the A T & T National in Bethesda, Maryland. It was his 3rd win this year and the 74th of his career.
