Double Track Bridge
Before the end of the summer... a landmark bridge in place since the 1920's will be a memory. PennDOT plans to remove the so – called “double track bridge” spanning Fishing Creek as part of a contract to install traffic signals and widen Route 42 at Perry Avenue. For West Bloomsburg resident Gerald Libey... its removal may take care of some of the flooding which has plagued that part of town. The double track concrete bridge was built in the 1920's... replacing a wooden bridge originally built in 1840.
An estimated 45 foot jump from a railroad trestle into Fishing Creek on Sunday apparently knocked the wind out of a 15 – year old Berwick teenager swimming with friends. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition... Bryce Kersey was pulled from the water by friends... who called Columbia County Emergency Dispatch. Bloomsburg Firemen responded... and were able to stabilize Kersey until he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
A 27 – year old Mount Carmel man has been arrested and charged with using a stolen credit card to make more than $1,200 in purchases. Police in Locust Township say 27 – year old Adam Powell is facing a long list of charges after he allegedly broke into several cars and trucks... using the credit cards he found to make purchases in the Coal Township area. Powell was arraigned before District Judge Craig Long of Catawissa and was sent to prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
Judging by the crowds at Berwick's Test Track Park over the weekend... the Columbia County Bassmasters fishing tournament and Family Fun Festival was a huge success. Part of that success came from the PPL Fun Fest Express... a train ride from the test track to Lime Ridge and return. The excursion was a collaborative effort between the North Shore Railroad... SEDA – COG and Jeff Pontius of Penn Valley Railroad who supplied the vintage passenger cars. Other trips are planned later this year from the Catawissa area... as well Bloomsburg.
Former Penn State Assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky spent another night in the Centre County Correctional Facility.... after being found guilty on 45 of 48 counts of child abuse. Jailers say Sandusky is in protective custody and on suicide watch for his protection. Sandusky is expected to remain in the correctional facility until his sentencing takes place... which is sometime in the next 90 days. He could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Luzerne County's new home rule government will try and come to terms with it's 110 – employee court – related bargaining unit. The union members will decide whether to accept or reject the county's final offer. If the new contract isn't accepted... it will go to binding arbitration... since the union isn't allowed to strike.
More work is expected to be preformed between the Mifflinville and Lime Ridge interchanges on Interstate 80 next week... where a $50 – million bridge project is being undertaken. On Wednesday.... the contractor will be setting a daylight signing pattern in order to close the right, westbound lane for traffic line removal and painting work. The following day... the right lane will see concrete barrier placement work. The work both days runs from 7 AM to 7 PM.
Portions of Heron Cove at PPL's Montour Preserve will be closed this week... and that includes the boat ramp. A utility spokesperson says it's all due to blacktop sealing work on the preserve's parking lot. The work is expected to be wrapped up by Saturday... weather permitting.
A Shenandoah resident is in the Schuylkill County Jail after being charged with shooting a man. 27 – year old Juan Jose Perez is being held in lieu of a half million dollars bail. Perez allegedly shot 24 – year old Ledis Hernandez after the pair got into an altercation on April 7th. A preliminary hearing for Perez is set for July 12th.
