Sandusky Trial Update
The jury in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case is scheduled to begin deliberations Thursday. Sandusky's defense team rested at mid-day Wednesday without putting the defendant on the stand. His lawyers had hinted he would address the jury, but opted against it. The flurry of activity came after Sandusky, the prosecution and the defense lawyers huddled in chambers with the judge. The judge will give the jury specific instructions at 9 AM Thursday, following by closing arguments. The jury will not be allowed to go home during its deliberations and the judge told its members to prepare for sequestration. In testimony earlier Wednesday, a former Second Mile participant who stayed at Sandusky's home more than 50 times testified Wednesday he believed police tried to get him to say things about Sandusky that were false. 21 – year old David Hilton of Lancaster County, said he met Sandusky when he was in fifth grade. They went to football games and traveled to San Franciso. Nothing inappropriate happened, he said. Sandusky is charged with 51 counts he sexually abused 10 young boys over a 15-year span. His wife, Dottie, testified Tuesday she never saw inappropriate contact between Sandusky and boys.
A consultant's report is now in the public domain... dealing with the options the Bloomsburg Area School District... as well as Central Columbia... have for possible consolidation. Central is in need of a new high school.... while Bloomsburg is trying to get away from the middle and high school being on the flood plain. Consolidation with Central is one option... but Bloomsburg Superintendent Cos Curry says there are others... such as buying land and building new schools… or building flood protection. The Central and Bloomsburg School Boards now have time to digest the report... with public meetings scheduled in July.
Susquehanna Nuclear Plant
Unit 1 at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station... north of Berwick... in Salem Township is off line Wednesday morning... after the nuclear reactor was shut down on Tuesday. A spokesman for PPL said they wanted to investigate the source of a minor water leak inside the containment building which surrounds the reactor. The leak is not affecting the plant's safety... or that of the public. No word when Unit 1 will come back on line.
Berwick Fun Festival
It will be a busy time this weekend at Test Track Park... along the Susquehanna River in Berwick. At least a hundred boats will be on the water with anglers taking part in the Columbia County Bassmasters fishing tournament. Also... plenty of things to do in the park during the annual Family Fun Festival... so says Otto Kurecian of the Columbia – Montour Visitors Bureau... such as taking a ride on the PPL's Fun Fest Express on the North Shore Railroad line.
A former Dallas Middle School Special Education teacher has been charged with invasion of privacy. 49 – year old David Shuga is accused of taking inappropriate photos of female students. Shuga... a Berwick High School and Bloomsburg University graduate... was arraigned Tuesday in front of a District Judge and released on $5,000 unsecured bail. He resigned his job earlier this month.
Two 19 – year old men are free... but face a long list of charges after their friend overdosed on heroin... and they didn't get immediate help. Kyle Yatsko and Robert Pupko the third... both of Drums telling police they were at a loss when Ryan Kline passed out and became unresponsive. Police were alerted when the pair were seen dragging Kline from a wooded area. Kline was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Pennsylvania State Police continue their search for a missing 42 – year old Hazleton woman. Candice McGeehan has been missing for the past month. She was last seen a month ago at the Hazleton Apartments complex in Hazle Township. If you know of McGeehan's whereabouts... or have seen her... call State Police at Hazleton.
A stick up of a Sheetz mini – mart in Wilkes – Barre Township early Tuesday morning. Now... police are looking for a man who showed a weapon at a clerk... taking money from the cash register. The clerk wasn't hurt in the overnight stick up in Wilkes – Barre Twp.
Gross revenue from table games was up 7.4% last month compared to a year ago, boosted by the second full month of play at the state's newest casino. That word from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem showed a 50% gain last month. In northeastern Pennsylvania, Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs showed a slight increase, while Mount Airy Casino Resort declined about 12% from a year ago, with about $2.8 - million in gross revenue from table games last month.
It was the decision of the Berwick school board to bring back George Curry as head coach when they learned that Gary Campbell was returning to Massachusetts to be coach and athletic director at Waconah Regional. But, it was Campbell who first told Curry that the job would soon be open. Campbell was the head coach at Berwick for six seasons.
The Miami Heat are one win away from capturing the NBA title. On Tuesday night... the Heat downed the Oklahoma City Thunder 104 to 98... taking a three to one lead in the NBA Finals. Game five... Thursday night night in Miami.
The Philadelphia Phillies were looking to get back on the winning track Tuesday night. They did so by defeating the Colorado Rockies 7 to 2... in the first of three games at Citizens Bank Park. Cole Hamels picked up his tenth win of the season. The Phil's and Rockies slug it out again Wednesday night.
