Deliberations in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse trial could begin as early as Thursday. Sandusky is accused of 52 counts of allegedly sexually abusing ten boys over a 15 – year span. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 is reporting that during proceedings on Monday... the prosecution wrapped up some loose ends... then the defense started presenting their witnesses.... mainly character witnesses who testified Sandusky's reputation was solid and was a stand – up guy... before the charges were filed. The session ended at mid-afternoon due to... what the Judge said... were technical issues that need to be addressed. It's not known if Sandusky will take the stand in his own defense... that is still to be determined. Court resumes Tuesday morning in Bellefonte.
Some changes are coming to the intersection of Route 42 and Perry Avenue in Hemlock Township. PennDOT's Rick Mason says starting Monday... a contractor will begin constructing a new signalized intersection. Eventually, new turning lanes will be installed. As part of the project... the now – closed Double – Track Bridge spanning Fishing Creek between Route 11 and Red Mill road will be removed. The entire $1.3 - million project is expected to be wrapped up by early November.
A Stillwater man is dead after he crashed his motorcycle on Route 487 in Orange Township over the weekend... but it wasn't spotted in a ditch until hours later. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition 51 – year old Robert Boccardo, Jr. died instantly when he apparently lost control of his Honda Gold Wing while southbound on 487 on Saturday. The bike and Boccardo's body were found hours later by a farmer who came upon the scene while driving his tractor near Moore's Grove.
Providing care for relatives confronts all of us at one time or another. That's why State Representative David Millard is holding a senior caregiver support forum tomorrow in Orangeville. Millard says calls to his office deal with programs available to caregivers. The forum will be held at 10 O'clock at the Orangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center at 200 Berwick Road... just off of Main Street.
The revitalization of Main Street in Bloomsburg will not happen overnight. That word from Adrienne Mael... Bloomsburg's latest Downtown Manager. During a recent interview.... Ms. Mael says one of her goals is to get Main Street redesignated through the Harrisburg – based Pennsylvania Downtown Center. The designation... according to Ms. Mael... would open the town to grant money which could be used for developing programs to bring people back to Main Street.
The US Labor Department has released figures showing Montour County has the lowest unemployment rate among the state's 67 counties. Montour County's April unemployment rate checked in at 4.9%... down a full percentage point from April of 2011. The Labor Department said Montour is the only county in the Commonwealth under 5%.
Barletta / Obama
Congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton... who represents Columbia County says he's not happy with President Obama's plan to grant amnesty to illegal aliens. Barletta says the start of the weekend announcement is nothing more than backdoor amnesty for an estimated 800,000 undocumented people. He also questioned how far the President will go before the the November general election.
The race for the White House came through northeastern Pennsylvania over the weekend. Presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made a stop at the Weatherly Casting and Machine Company in near-by Carbon County. Romney talked about jobs and the nation's economy. The stop at Weatherly by the former Massachusetts Governor is part of a tour of the northeast and the midwest... and ends in Michigan on Tuesday.
Investigators will spend the day trying to figure out what started a fire over the weekend at an Oak Street home in Coal Township near Shamokin. The blaze destroyed a three story home... forcing out a family of three out into the street. Tim Reigle and Amy Masden are now being helped from different sources.
The rail line which runs through Bloomsburg and as well as Columbia and Montour Counties has been sold. Richard Roby's interest in the North Shore Railroad... and other short lines started in the 80's... has been sold to 12 of his managers. There are published reports that the move has been okayed by the SEDA – COG Joint Railroad Authority. The operations of the railroads are expected to remain status quo.
Although his team didn't win, Blake Rankin's return to the football field was certainly a success. The recent Bloomsburg High School graduate, threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns and was named the Pennsylvania player of the game in Saturday's Big 33 Football Classic at Hershey Park Stadium. It was Rankin's first game action since suffering a devastating ankle injury early in the District 4 title game against Mount Camel last November. Despite Rankin's heroics on Saturday night, his Pennsylvania All Stars lost to Ohio 24-21.
The best season in the history of Southern Columbia softball ended on Friday morning with the Tigers 1-0 loss to Fannett - Metal in the Class A state championship game at Penn State. Southern Columbia will return all but one starter from this year's team that finished with a record of 23-4.
LeBron James collected 29 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Miami Heat to a 91 - 85 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game Three of the NBA Finals Sunday night. Miami leads the series two games to one.... and will host Game Four on Tuesday.
Toronto's Colby Rasmus went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI's as the Blue Jays swept a three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 6-2 victory Sunday. The Phillies have the day off. They'll begin a three game home stand against the Colorado Rockies Tuesday night.
