Berwick / Orange Street Elementary

Could the generations old Orange Street Elementary School in Berwick be closed? That's a question the Berwick Area School Board is looking at following the delivery of a feasibility study. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... the study shows the school has some major problems... such as cracks between the building constructed in 1927... and additions built in the 80's. Also... traffic on Orange Street is a big problem. No word when the board will make a final decision on the issue.

 

Sandusky / Wednesday

More alleged victims of Jerry Sandusky have testified in his child sex abuse trial. Two men testified Wednesday that Sandusky molested them several times as children. The court also heard from the father of Penn State assistant football coach Mike McQueary. John McQueary confirmed testimony from his son. Sandusky is being tried on more than 50 counts of sexually molesting ten boys over a 15-year period.
 

Downtown Bloomsburg

There is promising movement along Main Street in Bloomsburg.... especially west of Market Street. Newly – hired Downtown Manager Adrienne Mael says new shops to be constructed by the Zarrett family... next to Towne Camera.... as well as the new life being pumped into the Moose Exchange... is good for the community. Ms. Mael says changes along Main Street don't happen overnight, but rather take some time to bring to fruition.

 

Love Triangle

A Danville man is in the Montour County jail after he allegedly fired a shotgun into an SUV owned by a Bloomsburg man. Police says 28 – year old Joseph Zeager... and 47 – year old Michael Deski were seeing the same woman when they came upon each other earlier this month. Zeager getting a shotgun and firing it into Deski's SUV which was parked in a lot on Route 254 in Derry Township. Zeager is being held on 200 – thousand dollars bail.

 

Lotto Winner

A Shamokin woman has claimed her 1 – million dollar prize after winning in the Powerball lottery a couple of weeks ago. Lottery officials in Harrisburg say the woman is Dawn Drumheiser. The Danville State Hospital worker... and single mother of two... purchased her winning ticket at the Turkey Hill Convenience store in Shamokin.... with the winning ticket confirmed at a Leighow Food Shop in Danville.

 

Guilty Verdict

A West Hazleton man is going to spend a lot of time in prison following his conviction Wednesday of sexually assaulting a teenage girl over three years. It took a Luzerne County court jury about an hour to convict 40 – year old Hernan Torres. He's now in the Luzerne County prison in lieu of 75 – thousand dollars bail. Torres is due in court for sentencing in late September.

 

Wilkes – Barre Crash

Three people are in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township following a Wednesday accident at a construction site at Wilkes – Barre General Hospital. Police say the driver of a car... identified as Margaret Tomascik... blew through a construction zone... and hit two men laying concrete. The Tomascik car eventually hit a light pole. All three were transported to the hospital's Trauma unit for treatment.

 

Wright Township Chief

Wright Township... near Mountain Top in Luzerne County... has a new top cop. Supervisors naming Sgt. Royce Engler to the job this week. He replaces Joseph Jacob... who retired earlier this month after 20 – years of service. Jacob... then taking a job as deputy superintendent of the Capitol Police Department in Harrisburg.

 

Vet Expo

In an effort to bring veterans and their families living in Northumberland and Smyder County's in contact with area organizations, Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver will host a Veterans Benefit Expo Thursday. The event begins at 2 PM at the Shikellamy High School in Sunbury. Representatives from federal, state and county veterans agencies will be on hand... as well as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Veterans Center and a number of area veteran-related vendors.

 

Little League

If you're allegedly going to vandalize a Little League field media box... don't leave your cell phone behind. That's what happened to 39 – year old Brian Gashi of Harding. He's accused of breaking into... and then setting fire to the press box in at the Plains Little League field in Luzerne County. Police say Gashi set two fires... then made off with items used by the league to keep score and supply concession stands. Authorities caught Gashi when they discovered his cell phone in the rubble.

 

Teachers Rally
Hundreds of people protesting education funding cuts are hoping their rallies in Harrisburg might sway state lawmakers, though a spokesman for the governor says it's unlikely. Parents, teachers and even students filled the State Capitol rotunda in the first of two protests Wednesday. Protestors also gathered in front of the governor's mansion, demanding more state funding for public education. A spokesman for the state Department of Education says the loss of one-point-seven-billion in federal stimulus funding is to blame for reduced education funds.

 

Wiretapping Changes
A measure approved by the state House yesterday could make it legal for people to record conversations without consent if the person recording believes a law is being broken. Current Pennsylvania law bans recording any conversation either in-person or via telephone without the consent of both parties. The proposed law now goes to the state Senate for consideration.

 

Concert Series

A nice night to be in Bloomsburg Town Park. The Danville Community Band provided the toe – tapping music for last night's Summer Concert Series. When the sun started to go down... it got a bit cool... but it didn't chill the enthusiasm for the band's performance at the band shell. The Summer Concert continues next Wednesday night with the appearance of the Seasoned Sounds... a big band era orchestra.

Blake Rankin

When Bloomsburg High School grad Blake Rankin takes the field in Saturday night's Big 33 Football Classic, it will be his first game action since he suffered a devastating ankle injury last November in the District 4 Class AA final against Mount Carmel. Rankin isn't worried about his ankle. He's more concerned with playing quarterback in a system he's not used to. Rankin is expected to split time at quarterback with Skyler Mornhinwig of St. Joseph's Prep when the Pennsylvania stars face the best from Ohio in Saturday night's game which begins at 7 at Hershey Park Stadium.

 

NBA Finals

Game two of the NBA final series between the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder takes place Thursday night in OKC. The Thunder lead the series one game to none.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies finally got the monkey off their back Wednesday night... as they defeated the Minnesota Twins 9 to 8 at Target Field. Philadelphia getting a trio of home runs... putting up six runs in the top of the first inning. Thursday night... the rubber game of the series with the Twins. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 7:35... with the first pitch scheduled for 8:10 on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.

 

Perfect Game

San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain threw the 22nd perfect game in MLB history during 10-0 win over the Houston Astros in the City by the Bay.
